Corfu, June 27 – Water supply to seven villages in Central Corfu has shown significant improvement in recent days, according to Stefanos Poulis, Mayor and President of DEYAK (Corfu Municipal Water and Sewerage Company). This follows the completion of interventions in boreholes, pumping stations, reservoirs, and water transfer networks.

Interventions Bring Relief to Central Corfu Villages

Poulis stated that the recent interventions have already yielded positive results in areas that previously faced severe water supply problems, specifically mentioning Sinarades and Pelekas. Data indicates a full water supply in Gastouri today, despite the ongoing strain on its old network. Additionally, the villages of Agia Deka, Stavros, Kamara, Kastellani, Varipatades, Kalafationes, Sinarades, Pelekas, and Agios Ioannis are now regularly supplied with water.

Temporary Stabilization in Corfu Town, Long-Term Solution Sought

Regarding Corfu town, Mayor Poulis emphasized that recent issues with the central pipeline in the Chrysida area have been temporarily resolved. However, he stressed that the pipeline remains highly problematic, and complacency should be avoided throughout the summer period.

Main Network Replacement Study Underway

DEYAK has already commissioned a study for the replacement of the central water transfer pipeline, which runs from the Chrysida springs to the Analiptis facilities and then to Corfu Hospital. The Mayor stated that DEYAK’s goal is to secure the necessary funding to provide a definitive solution to Corfu town’s water supply problem.

Previous Water Management Efforts in Corfu

This development follows earlier reports of urgent water infrastructure projects on the island. On June 27, it was announced that emergency water works totaling 1.6 million euros were underway in Corfu, involving the replacement of 8.8 kilometers of old pipelines. These ongoing efforts highlight the municipality’s commitment to addressing long-standing water supply challenges across the island.

Context of Water Scarcity and Infrastructure in Greece

Corfu, like many Greek islands, faces unique challenges in water management due to its geographical characteristics and seasonal fluctuations in demand, especially during the peak tourist season. The reliance on aging infrastructure often leads to disruptions, making investments in modernizing water networks crucial for sustainable development and public health. The planned replacement of the central pipeline represents a significant step towards ensuring a reliable and efficient water supply for both residents and the tourism sector.

Future Outlook for Corfu’s Water Security

The successful stabilization of water supply in the seven villages and the proactive planning for the main pipeline replacement signal a positive outlook for Corfu’s water security. The municipality’s focus on securing funding underscores the importance of this project and its potential long-term benefits for the island’s infrastructure and quality of life. Continued monitoring and maintenance will be essential to sustain these improvements and prevent future disruptions.
