Corfu, June 26, 2026 – A delegation from the Ionian Islands Police Officers Union, comprising President Epameinondas Katopodis, Vice President Spyridon Riganas, General Secretary Georgios Kourkoulos, and Organizational Secretary Panagiotis Santas, held a series of institutional meetings on Tuesday, June 23, 2026. The meetings took place at the Corfu Police Headquarters with Major General Dimitrios Voulgaris, the General Regional Police Director of the Ionian Islands, and Brigadier General Spyridon Skolarikis, the Director of the Corfu Police Department.

Key Issues Addressed with the General Regional Police Director

During the meeting with Major General Voulgaris, the Union highlighted pressing issues faced by police services across the four Police Directorates coordinated by the General Regional Police Directorate of the Ionian Islands. A primary concern raised was the need to maintain and increase the existing police personnel reinforcement during the critical summer months, extending until September. This is deemed essential due to the rapid increase in population during this period, which necessitates enhanced policing to prevent crime and instill a sense of security among citizens.

Furthermore, the Union emphasized the gradual need for new patrol vehicles for the island services. They proposed securing these vehicles either through national resources or by integrating them into European programs via the Ionian Islands Regional Authority.

Major General Voulgaris, demonstrating a welcoming demeanor and a comprehensive understanding of the issues affecting the island services, meticulously recorded the Union’s proposals. He assured the delegation that, within his institutional role, he would contribute to the implementation of the discussed matters.

Meeting with the Director of Corfu Police Department

Following the initial meeting, a second session was held with Brigadier General Spyridon Skolarikis, the Director of the Corfu Police Department, who is also a member of the Union. This meeting focused on analyzing daily operational issues and challenges within the Corfu Police Department.

Brigadier General Skolarikis, well-versed in the specific problems confronting the Corfu Police Department, guaranteed his commitment to resolving these issues. His ultimate goal is to optimize the services provided to citizens and the local community.

Union’s Ongoing Commitment

The Ionian Islands Police Officers Union affirmed its dedication and fighting spirit, vowing to continue its contacts and actions. The Union’s objective is to bring to light the problems affecting its organization and members, striving for a modern police force that stands by its citizens and society.
