Mar-Bella Collection Launches Sea Turtle Protection Program in Corfu

For decades, luxury tourism was measured by sea-view suites, private pools, and gourmet dining experiences. Today, however, an increasing number of travelers seek something less tangible but equally valuable: the assurance that their chosen destination will remain vibrant for future generations.

A New Chapter for Sustainable Tourism in Corfu

This shift in expectations is addressed by the new collaboration between Mar-Bella Collection and ARCHELON, through their support of the first Sea Turtle Protection Program in Corfu. The initiative, funded by the Ionian Environment Foundation, focuses on monitoring and protecting the Caretta-Caretta sea turtle and its critical habitats on the island.

The choice of Corfu is no accident. The southeastern coastline of Corfu has seen increased nesting activity in recent years, a phenomenon scientists link to changing climatic conditions in the Mediterranean. As sea turtles seek new breeding grounds, the need for systematic monitoring and protection becomes more urgent than ever.

When Hospitality Meets Biodiversity

The program includes daily patrols of nesting beaches, identification and marking of nests, placement of protective grids, and scientific recording of hatching results. This work combines field research, volunteer efforts, and a continuous presence on the coasts throughout the summer season.

For ARCHELON, which has systematically monitored Caretta-Caretta nesting beaches in Greece since 1983, Corfu now represents a new and particularly important field of action. As Michalis Souroulidis, Field Programs Coordinator for the organization, points out: “The protection of sea turtles requires a stable presence in the field, scientific knowledge, and collaborations with real impact. The launch of this program in Corfu allows us to effectively monitor and protect an area of increasing importance for the species, as sea turtle nesting on the island is expected to increase in the coming years due to changing climatic conditions. It is particularly encouraging to see businesses like Mar-Bella Collection genuinely investing in the preservation of the Ionian’s natural wealth.”

This collaboration is especially significant at a time when the tourism sector is called upon to demonstrate that sustainability is not just part of its communication strategy but a core pillar of its operations. Biodiversity protection is evolving into a critical indicator of responsible development, especially in areas where natural beauty is the most significant comparative advantage.

The Ionian: A Strategic Priority for Mar-Bella Collection

This initiative is part of Mar-Bella Collection’s broader ESG strategy, which revolves around three key pillars: the protection of the Ionian Sea, environmental responsibility, and connection with local communities.

This specific partnership also highlights the growing role the tourism sector must play in preserving the natural wealth of the destinations where it operates. As Dr. Simon Carydis, Executive Director of the Ionian Environment Foundation, notes: “At the Ionian Environment Foundation, we believe that protecting the biodiversity of the Ionian is a shared responsibility. We are particularly pleased that Mar-Bella Collection is supporting ARCHELON’s first sea turtle protection program in Corfu. This initiative is an excellent example of how the tourism sector can make a substantial contribution to preserving the unique biodiversity of the Ionian, investing in actions that create measurable environmental impact, contributing to the conservation of one of the most iconic species in the Mediterranean.”

This is not the first time the group has invested in sustainability actions. Its hotels operate under a certified Sustainable Management System according to international standards, while units such as Elix, MarBella, and Nido hold Green Key certification. Furthermore, MarBella’s beach has maintained its Blue Flag status for ten consecutive years.

As Anastasia Psarra, Corporate Communications & ESG Manager at Mar-Bella Collection, states: “For more than 50 years, the Ionian Sea has been an integral part of the Mar-Bella Collection. Our support for ARCHELON’s first sea turtle protection program in Corfu is a natural continuation of our philosophy: to actively protect what inspires us. Through this initiative, we invest in science, research, and local action, ensuring that the natural beauty and biodiversity of the Ionian will remain vibrant for future generations.”

The Future of Tourism: Beyond Luxury

Behind this specific action lies a larger change taking place in global tourism. Hotel groups are no longer evaluated solely on the quality of their services but also on the footprint they leave on the destinations where they operate.

In a world where climate change reshapes ecosystems and even shifts the boundaries of breeding grounds for species like the Caretta-Caretta, nature protection ceases to be a matter of corporate social responsibility and transforms into a prerequisite for long-term sustainability.

If the Ionian beaches continue to welcome sea turtles for generations to come, then initiatives like this will have left an imprint that goes beyond the protection of a single species, touching upon the very preservation of the region’s natural heritage.
