Korakiana Philharmonic Society Receives Acclaim in New York City
NEW YORK. For the first time, the Korakiana Philharmonic Society of Corfu participated in the Greek Independence Day celebrations in New York City, including a parade on 5th Avenue and appearances at central events, drawing significant applause.
The musical ensemble, comprising over 80 musicians led by maestro Kostas Zervopoulos, took part in the official Greek flag-raising ceremony at Bowling Green in Manhattan on Friday, April 24. They also attended other events centered around the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church at Ground Zero, where an official doxology was held.
Highlight of the Celebrations: 5th Avenue Parade
On Sunday, April 26, the Korakiana Philharmonic performed on 5th Avenue in Manhattan, during the grand parade of the Greek diaspora, which marked the culmination of the celebratory events. As in previous years, the Presidential Guard’s Evzones section received the warmest applause, marching to the tunes of the Corfiot philharmonic, which subsequently accompanied other participating groups.
Beyond the thousands of expatriates, the events were attended by Archbishop Elpidophoros of America, senators, and representatives of New York City authorities. The Hellenic Republic was officially represented by the Speaker of the Hellenic Parliament, Nikitas Kaklamanis, accompanied by members of the Greek Parliament. Also present was the Regional Governor of the Ionian Islands, Ioannis Trepekles, who praised the Korakiana Philharmonic Society’s participation in the celebrations as an ambassador of the cultural tradition of the Ionian Islands.
The events also featured a traditional dance group from Larissa, as well as a delegation from the Municipality of Messolonghi, as the celebrations coincided with the 200th anniversary of the heroic Exodus of Messolonghi.
Corfu’s Musical Legacy in the USA
It is worth noting that this was the fourth time a Corfiot Philharmonic has visited the USA to participate in diaspora events. The Corfu Philharmonic Society had previously performed in 1995 and 2024, and the Mantzaros Philharmonic Society in 2019, showcasing Corfu’s rich musical tradition on an international stage.
