Corfu, Greece – Zisimos 1928, a beloved café restaurant with a rich history spanning almost a century, has reopened its doors at its historic location in Liston, Corfu. The reopening marks a new chapter for the establishment, which has been an integral part of the island’s social fabric since its inception.
A Timeless Legacy Reimagined
Since 1928, Zisimos has been more than just a café or a restaurant; it has been a place where generations of Corfiots have gathered, conversed, celebrated, and made memories. The new iteration of Zisimos aims to honor this enduring legacy by maintaining its philosophy of hospitality, attention to detail, and timeless aesthetic.
The white tablecloths, the meticulous service, and the nostalgic ambiance of a bygone era have been consciously preserved. This commitment reflects a dedication to authentic hospitality, valuing simplicity, and cherishing shared moments in a space steeped in nearly a century of history.
A Space for Every Moment
The revived Zisimos is designed to be a welcoming space for everyone, at any time of day. Guests can enjoy anything from a morning coffee or brunch to lunch, a light meal, a glass of wine, an aperitif, dinner, or even a dessert. The menu features beloved traditional flavors, including the “Kyrios Nikos Variety” and the famous “Sokolatina.” Visitors can also savor a plate of “Gemista” or a Greek coffee under the shade of the Liston trees, with views of the city’s historic arches.
Community Feedback and Future Plans
The reopening has generated considerable discussion among locals, with some expressing strong opinions regarding certain changes. Comments from Corfiot residents highlight a desire for the establishment to retain its traditional charm and offerings.
- One resident, Zisimos, commented on June 15, 2026, at 4:45 PM: “Zisimos never had white tablecloths. Bring back Kyrios Nikos’ toast with salad and bakery bread, old-style mocha, cheese pie, and ouzo mezedes like in the old days. Otherwise, you will also go bankrupt like the previous ones. Oh, and don’t bring back the saxophonist; the whole spectacle was laughable. Also, your decoration needs a change, as there is essentially no decoration. Especially the orange lights (to resemble kumquats?) are irrelevant to the space and its history. Friendly… a Corfiot.”
- Elena also commented on June 15, 2026, at 6:56 PM: “Please, take off the tablecloths. It’s an insult to every Corfiot’s eyes. It’s a lack of respect for our habits, our past, our Corfiot identity!!! Where have you ever heard of a tablecloth under the Liston trees!!!”
- A “Corfiot citizen” added on June 15, 2026, at 7:30 PM: “Who said we would sit in the shop with musicians? At most, some low music just for the atmosphere under the arches. Essentially, we want our peace, to have a chat and some jokes with friends. As for the white tablecloths, we are not burned. You see them and you don’t know what ‘bill’ will come. Always with good intentions and respect for the shop and those who serve the people.”
- Finally, “Politis” commented on June 15, 2026, at 10:03 PM: “Your neighboring cafe has a very decent meze for ouzo or tsipouro for 5€. And it raises it every year. But so be it. It’s fair. If you think that with tablecloths and gourmet dishes you will attract the Corfiot, then I also fear that you will run aground. I’m sorry, the name alone is not enough. Affordable prices and simple things for simple people. That’s what our visitors are looking for TOO.”
The revival effort is still ongoing, with the goal of bringing back beloved elements and creating a meeting point worthy of its history, from the menu to the details of the space.
