Athens Metro Line 3 Faces Temporary Nightly Closures for Upgrade Works
Athens, June 15 – Athens Metro Line 3 has implemented temporary service changes and station closures from May 14 through June 18 to facilitate crucial maintenance and upgrade works across its network. These interventions, following the earlier-than-expected completion of works on Line 2, are now focused on the Panormou-Nomismatokopio section.
During this period, five key stations – Panormou, Katehaki, Ethniki Amyna, Holargos, and Nomismatokopio – will temporarily close each day from Sunday to Thursday at 9:40 p.m. This closure time is approximately two and a half hours earlier than the network’s standard end-of-service schedule.
Modified Schedules and Airport Service Adjustments
The upgrade works necessitate modified train schedules, impacting the final departures from several central metro stations. Furthermore, services to and from Athens International Airport will also experience changes, with some trains terminating earlier than usual.
To alleviate the inconvenience for commuters and minimize disruption, OASA, the Athens Urban Transport Organisation, has introduced a temporary bus service. This replacement bus route will operate between Ambelokipi and Halandri, making stops at all stations affected by the nightly closures.
Enhancing Safety and Reliability
Transport authorities have emphasized that these works are essential for enhancing the overall safety, reliability, and long-term performance of the Athens metro system. They are urging all passengers to check service updates in advance and meticulously plan their journeys to account for the temporary changes.
The comprehensive maintenance and upgrade program aims to ensure the continued efficient and safe operation of one of Athens’ most vital public transportation arteries. While temporary inconvenience is unavoidable, the long-term benefits of these improvements are expected to significantly enhance the commuter experience.
