Less than a month remains until the deadline for registering elevators in the Elevator Registry, yet owner compliance remains limited. Despite a seven-month extension, the number of declarations continues to fall significantly short of initial estimates.
June 30, 2026: The Final Deadline
The final registration date is set for June 30, 2026, and the possibility of another extension is considered highly unlikely. According to Article 70 of Law 5218/2025, which established the Elevator Inventory Registry, only one extension of the relevant deadline is provided for. Therefore, any new time extension would require legislative intervention from Parliament and cannot simply be decided by a ministerial decision.
Low Compliance Despite Extension
Based on available information, approximately 288,000 elevators have been registered to date. Progress during the extension period was limited, as only 18,000 new registrations were added since late November 2025, when registrations stood at approximately 270,000.
At the same time, uncertainty persists regarding the total number of elevators operating in the country. While the Ministry of Development initially estimated the number to be around 700,000, data from the Hellenic Statistical Authority’s 2021 building census indicates approximately 310,000 elevators, creating a significant discrepancy between the two estimates.
Penalties for Non-Compliance
The expiration of the deadline is particularly significant due to the penalties provided for those who do not comply. Fines are set at €1,000 per elevator for residential buildings, €2,500 for commercial or mixed-use buildings, and €5,000 for facilities serving the general public, such as hospitals and public services. The responsibility for registration and the imposition of fines lies with the property owners, not the tenants.
