The Municipality of North Corfu was honored with a significant distinction at the 5th Attica Green Expo, which took place from Wednesday, May 27th, to Saturday, May 30th, at the “Tae Kwon Do” Olympic Indoor Hall in Paleo Faliro, Athens. The award recognized the Municipality’s outstanding work in circular economy, environmental protection, and sustainable development.
North Corfu’s Recognition at Attica Green Expo
The inauguration of the Expo on May 27th saw the presence of government representatives, local authorities, academics, and business leaders. The Attica Green Expo 2026 has established itself as a leading institution for the environment and circular economy, hosting 150 exhibitors and over 450 speakers, with a particular focus on environmental awareness among the younger generation. The Minister of Environment and Energy, Stavros Papastavrou, opened the proceedings, outlining the government’s vision for balanced development that combines economic progress with environmental protection.
Mayor Machimaris Accepts the Award
During the event, the Municipality of North Corfu was recognized as one of the two honored Municipalities. Mayor Georgios Machimaris received the award from the Minister of Environment and Energy, Mr. Stavros Papastavrou, in a particularly symbolic moment of the event. The Municipality’s booth at the Expo offered exhibitors and visitors traditional Corfiot treats, such as mandolatos and kumquat, showcasing the island’s gastronomic identity.
Active Participation in Green Panels
The Deputy Mayor for Circular Economy and Environment, Ms. Spyridoula Kokkali, played a prominent role, coordinating a Green Panel titled “Circular economy, environment, and ecology in Greece: Challenges and applications at the local government level.” This panel featured representatives from local government and scientific bodies. Additionally, Mayor Georgios Machimaris participated in four high-level panels focusing on local government and the environment.
Cultural Contribution and Future Goals
A special cultural and moving touch was added by the choirs of the Federation of Corfiot Associations of Attica “Faiakon Ode” and the Association of Phaeacians of Ilioupolis and neighboring municipalities, along with the three conductors of the Municipal Philharmonics and a mixed musical ensemble that traveled to Athens. Their presence garnered significant attention and highlighted the cultural identity of the Municipality of North Corfu.
Despite significant challenges, the Municipality of North Corfu continues its daily efforts in areas such as water supply, infrastructure, culture, sports, and education, aiming for a modern, resilient, and sustainable Municipality. Furthermore, their work extends beyond daily management to actively protect, promote, and utilize the natural and environmental wealth of the region-including waterfalls, Anthrograva, Antinioti Lagoon, and watermills-elements that constitute the unique identity of North Corfu and are a key pillar of sustainable development.
Warm congratulations were extended to the organizers, Mr. Stefanos Fanourgakis and Evdokia Nikolouzou, for the excellent organization and high standard of the exhibition. This distinction represents a collective recognition for all citizens and a substantial legacy for the future of the region.
