Athens, May 26 – Dikaiosynis (Justice) Square, a prominent public space in central Athens, has officially reopened to the public after undergoing comprehensive restoration and landscaping. The project, a collaborative effort between the Municipality of Athens and Visa through the “Visa for Athens” initiative, aimed at revitalizing the historic square and enhancing the daily urban experience in the capital.

Extensive Renovation Improves Aesthetics and Functionality

The restoration works at Justice Square, located on Panepistimiou Street, encompassed both technical improvements and significant greenery upgrades. The interventions were designed to enhance the overall aesthetics and functionality of the square, which has long been a focal point of Athens’ public life and democratic expression.

Athens Mayor Haris Doukas emphasized that the project is part of a broader municipal strategy to reintegrate the square into the city’s daily rhythm. Mayor Doukas noted that while the area holds deep historical significance, it had shown visible signs of neglect in recent years, prompting the need for this extensive renovation.

Key Restoration Works Undertaken:

  • Replacement of damaged marble steps and paving stones.
  • Restoration of existing planters.
  • Thorough cleaning of marble surfaces and benches.
  • Installation of new trees and flowering plants as part of the landscaping upgrade.
  • Maintenance of the bronze statue of Alekos Panagoulis and the sculpture “Nike IV”.
  • Implementation of a new automated irrigation system.

In total, the landscaping efforts included the planting of 18 new trees, 17 shrubs, and 300 flowering plants, contributing significantly to the square’s refreshed appearance and ecological value.

Public-Private Partnership for Urban Improvement

The Municipality of Athens highlighted that its partnership with Visa is a crucial component of a broader public-private initiative. This initiative is dedicated to improving public spaces and enhancing accessibility across Athens, demonstrating a shared commitment to urban development and community well-being.

Antony Cahill, CEO & Regional President of Visa Europe, reiterated Visa’s commitment to supporting local communities. “Through our collaboration with the Municipality of Athens, we are reinforcing our commitment to supporting local commerce, improving accessibility, and enhancing the experience of residents and visitors,” said Cahill, underscoring the broader impact of such initiatives beyond mere aesthetic improvements.

A Historic Landmark Reimagined for Modern Athens

The reopening of Justice Square marks a significant milestone in Athens’ ongoing urban regeneration efforts. By restoring and upgrading this central public space, the city aims to provide residents and visitors with a more enjoyable and functional environment. The project not only preserves the historical integrity of the square but also adapts it to meet the contemporary needs of a bustling European capital.

The enhanced green spaces and improved infrastructure are expected to contribute to a higher quality of urban life, offering a more welcoming and accessible area for relaxation, social gatherings, and civic activities. This initiative sets a precedent for future urban renewal projects, showcasing the positive outcomes that can be achieved through effective public-private collaborations.

The transformation of Justice Square is a testament to Athens’ dedication to maintaining its rich heritage while embracing modernization and sustainability in its urban planning. The square is now ready to once again serve as a vibrant hub for the city’s residents and a welcoming landmark for tourists.

The Municipality of Athens continues to explore similar partnerships and projects to further enhance its public spaces, aiming to create a more livable and attractive city for everyone.
