American Airlines Inaugurates First Direct Athens-Dallas Route, Further Boosting US Connectivity from Greek Capital

Athens, May 27 – Athens International Airport (AIA) celebrated a significant milestone on May 22 with the inauguration of the first-ever direct flight to Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW), operated by American Airlines. This new route is a key component of American Airlines’ expanded 2026 schedule from Athens, which now includes 35 weekly departures to five major US hubs during the peak summer season.

The launch of the Dallas route follows a successful period for Athens International Airport, which recently won the ‘Over 20 million passengers’ category at the Routes Europe Awards in Rimini, Italy, a repeat of its success from Routes World 2025. This recognition highlights AIA’s strong collaboration within the route development community and its commitment to enhancing air connectivity.

American Airlines: A Success Story in Athens

The partnership between American Airlines and Athens International Airport has evolved significantly over the years, establishing a strong presence in the Greek market:

  • May 2007: US Airways (now American Airlines) initiated its first service to Athens, connecting it with Philadelphia.
  • 2016: The route officially transitioned from US Airways to American Airlines.
  • 2019: American Airlines introduced a direct connection to Chicago, marking the first direct flight to this iconic US metropolis from Athens.
  • 2021 (Post-Pandemic): New York (JFK) was added to the network, complementing existing services to Philadelphia and Chicago.
  • 2025: A direct route to Charlotte was introduced, further expanding US connectivity.

Between 2007 and 2025, American Airlines transported over 2 million passengers on direct services between the US and Athens. The year 2025 was particularly strong, with a record 28% growth in passenger traffic compared to 2024.

Dallas: The Fifth US Destination from Athens

With the addition of Dallas, American Airlines now offers direct flights to five US destinations from Athens, establishing its largest network to the US to date. This expansion increases American Airlines’ seat capacity in the Athens market by 30% compared to summer 2025. The daily DFW service utilizes Boeing 773 and 772 aircraft.

Dallas-Fort Worth serves as American Airlines’ largest global hub, providing over 930 daily departures to more than 230 destinations across 30 countries. This significantly enhances onward connectivity for passengers from Athens to various locations within the United States, Mexico, and Latin America.

Official Statements on the New Route

During the inaugural event, Sophia Philis Ortiz, VP-Phoenix Operations at American Airlines, expressed her enthusiasm: “We’re excited to continue strengthening our presence in Greece with the launch of our new Athens-Dallas Fort Worth service. This new route complements our existing operation in Athens and expands connectivity to our largest hub. As a first-generation American with deep family ties to Greece, I’m especially proud to represent American Airlines at today’s inaugural.”

Ioanna Papadopoulou, Director of Communications & Marketing at Athens International Airport, highlighted the strategic importance of the new connection: “The launch of the new connection between Athens and Dallas-Fort Worth is a highly significant and exciting development, further enhancing Athens’ connectivity with the United States of America. Along with the successful seasonal services from/to Charlotte, New York/JFK, Chicago, and Philadelphia, the new connection with Dallas provides even more options for the traveling public with American Airlines’ excellent product. The U.S. market keeps recording impressive growth in Athens, consistently ranking at the top position among our most important and popular markets.”

Andreas Fiorentinos, Secretary General of the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO), underscored the strategic importance of the American market for Greek tourism, noting the high-spending power of US travelers and the potential for further growth. “The statistics show that there’s so much more potential for growth,” Fiorentinos stated.

Growing US-Athens Market and Future Opportunities

In 2025, the total Origin & Destination (O&D) market between the USA and Athens reached a record 2 million round-trip passengers, representing a strong 12% growth compared to 2024. This positive trend continued into 2026, with O&D traffic between the US and Athens increasing by an additional 10% during the first four months of the year.

For Summer 2026, Athens will offer an impressive 103 weekly departures to the US, averaging almost 15 daily flights. These services will connect Athens to nine US destinations (JFK, EWR, ORD, PHL, ATL, BOS, IAD, CLT, & DFW) and will be operated by five airlines (American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Emirates, Norse Atlantic Airways, and United Airlines).

Despite this robust network, IATA AirportIS data from 2025 indicates that 61% of O&D traffic between the US and Athens still traveled indirectly, highlighting significant developmental opportunities for direct routes in the US market. Athens International Airport remains committed to strengthening its partnership with American Airlines and supporting its developmental plans for flights to and from Athens.

The airport extended warm wishes for safe and full flights, and many happy landings to Athens, emphasizing the positive outlook for this expanded connectivity.
