Corfu Residents Urge Immediate Cleaning of ‘Prison Grove’ Due to Fire Risk
Corfu, May 27 – Residents residing in the vicinity of the ‘Prison Grove’ in Corfu have issued an urgent appeal to local authorities for the immediate cleaning of the area. A memorandum-request, signed by 26 residents from the wider area of Cyprus Street, has been submitted to the Central Corfu Municipality and the Fire Department, highlighting the severe fire risk posed by overgrown dry grass and bushes.
Long-Standing Neglect and Fire Hazard Concerns
The residents’ petition emphasizes the critical need for prompt intervention to clear the dry vegetation within the grove. They state that the presence of dry grass and non-ornamental bushes, particularly on the southern side and around the large trees, constitutes a substantial amount of combustible material. This, they warn, could lead to a catastrophic fire, directly threatening their homes and lives should suitable conditions arise.
“We, the residents of Cyprus Street, and the wider area where our homes are located near the Prison Grove, submit this request to your service to schedule and carry out the immediate cleaning of the dry grass and bushes within the grove,” the memorandum reads.
The residents further stressed that the neglect of this specific area of the grove is not a recent issue but a long-standing problem. “The abandonment of this specific area of the grove from a cleaning perspective is not recent but has been ongoing, and it is by sheer luck that no fire has occurred to date,” they stated in their appeal. They also made it clear that they are no longer willing to tolerate this dangerous situation, which jeopardizes their properties and their lives.
Call for Immediate Action Before It’s Too Late
The residents concluded their appeal by expressing their hope for understanding and immediate action from the authorities. “Hoping for your understanding, we ask for your immediate actions before it is too late,” the petition concluded, underscoring the urgency of the situation.
The ‘Prison Grove’ is located in Corfu, within the Decentralized Administration of Peloponnese, Western Greece, and the Ionian Islands. The residents’ plea comes amidst broader concerns about fire prevention, as the Central Corfu Municipality recently announced fire protection measures for property owners during the fire season.
This incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by local communities in maintaining public safety and environmental health, particularly in areas prone to fire risks due to climate conditions and vegetation growth.
