Corfu Airport to Add 20 New International Flight Connections, Boosting Tourism
Corfu, May 27, 2026 – Corfu International Airport ‘Ioannis Kapodistrias’ is set to introduce 20 new international flight connections, starting gradually from late May. This significant expansion is expected to further bolster the island’s already robust tourism sector, which has shown remarkable resilience despite global challenges. The announcement comes as official data from Fraport confirms a continuous upward trend in Corfu’s tourism for 2026, with total passenger arrivals from the start of the tourist season already exceeding those of 2025, a record-breaking year.
New Routes and Airlines
The new direct connections will link Corfu with a diverse range of European cities, including Sofia, Bucharest, Belgrade, Zagreb, Barcelona, Chisinau, Rome, Pisa, Bologna, Verona, Venice, Bolzano, Bari, Catania, Naples, Budapest, Gothenburg, Shannon, and Madrid. Airlines with the highest frequency for these new routes will primarily be Wizz Air, Iberia, and Ryanair, indicating a strategic focus on budget and popular carriers to maximize accessibility.
A Promising Outlook for Corfu’s Tourism
This initiative underscores the strong foundations of Greece’s tourism industry, particularly in Corfu, which continues to thrive even amidst geopolitical uncertainties such as the conflict in the Middle East. The consistent growth in tourist numbers suggests that Corfu remains a highly attractive destination for international travelers.
According to Antonis Ferentinos, a representative for Startmedia, more flight connections are anticipated to be announced in June, further enhancing the island’s connectivity for the tourist season. If conditions related to aviation fuel and other operational factors remain favorable, 2026 is projected to set a new record for Corfu International Airport, surpassing all previous years in passenger traffic.
Impact on Local Economy
The increase in flight connections is expected to have a positive ripple effect on the local economy, benefiting hotels, restaurants, and other tourism-related businesses. Improved accessibility often translates to higher tourist numbers, longer stays, and increased spending, contributing significantly to the island’s prosperity.
The strategic expansion of air routes is a testament to Corfu’s growing popularity as a premier European holiday destination. With a diverse range of new direct flights, the island is poised to attract an even broader international audience, solidifying its position in the global tourism market.
