The Mayor of South Corfu, Mr. Kavvadias, has released a detailed statement regarding the progress of major projects within the municipality. This comes after recent announcements from members of the previous administration following the 2nd Accountability Session of the Municipal Council. The current municipal authority emphasizes its commitment to transparency and aims to set the record straight on the actual state of inherited projects and the measures taken to secure their completion.
Road Network: Progress Amidst Past Mismanagement
The road maintenance project, valued at €1.5 million, was intended for the entire municipality. However, the current administration inherited a situation where 80% of these funds had been almost exclusively spent on the Meliteieon Municipal Unit (excluding Strongyli and Chlomos).
Current Intervention: The municipality received a remaining balance of €433,000. Despite this, they successfully completed works in Vasilatika-Korakades, interventions in Petriti, the Latzes-Argyrades road, and a section in Strongyli.
Outcome: A balance of €280,000 remains, and an extension has been granted to the contractor until May 28, 2026, to finalize the project. The project is thus ongoing, despite the significant absorption of funds by the previous administration.
Lefkimmi Indoor Gymnasium: Securing Completion with Additional Funding
The previous administration initiated this project with an incomplete study and insufficient funding, jeopardizing its completion.
Current Intervention: The new administration commissioned a new study and increased the funding to €3,799,788.58.
Gain: An additional €1,000,000 was secured, and €760,560.73 from the municipality’s own resources were released, earmarked for other projects in 2026. The project now has guaranteed funding for its completion.
Rural Road Construction: Rectifying Legal Gaps
A consortium of two contractors was initially involved in this project. However, one of the contractors went bankrupt, rendering the project unexecutable. An attempt to substitute the contractor was rejected by the Court of Auditors.
Solution: The municipality is now proceeding with an immediate re-tendering. A new contractor is expected to be in place within six months. The project remains active and will be fully implemented.
Electrification: Restoring Legality and Transparency
It was discovered that the €1.45 million electrification supply had been tendered with significant inconsistencies (different machinery in the study versus the tender announcement), without a prior decision from the Municipal Committee to amend the Technical Bulletin.
Action: The incorrect tender has been canceled, and a new re-tendering process is underway, prioritizing absolute transparency and technical correctness.
SMART CITY: Digital Transformation with Substantial Energy Upgrade
The “Smart City” project, formally contracted by the current Municipal Authority, has moved beyond its initial limited objectives. Key interventions have been made to ensure maximum benefit for citizens:
Strategic Modification: The municipality requested and successfully achieved an amendment to the Technical Bulletin, incorporating the installation of 350 modern LED lighting fixtures.
Additional Initiative: With its own initiative and a funding of €600,000 from municipal resources, the administration is proceeding with the replacement of an additional 2,000 lighting fixtures with LED technology.
Result: The municipality is transforming into a modern, “smart” city, simultaneously achieving a massive energy upgrade and a drastic reduction in operating costs (electricity bills). These saved resources will be redirected to citizens through other services.
In conclusion, South Corfu does not need communication fireworks but projects with secured funding and proper studies. The current Municipal Authority is working daily to “heal” the failures of the past and deliver the infrastructure that citizens deserve. All the above constitute irrefutable evidence of a strategy that corrects mistakes, secures lost funds, and produces work with transparency and a clear plan.
