Mayor Kavvadias Addresses South Corfu Projects Amidst Past Mismanagement Claims
Corfu, March 4, 2026 – The Mayor of South Corfu, Mr. Kavvadias, has issued a comprehensive statement regarding the progress of major projects within the municipality. The announcement follows the 2nd Accountability Session of the Municipal Council, during which previous administration members raised concerns. Mayor Kavvadias emphasized the current municipal authority’s commitment to transparency and rectifying past issues.
Road Network: Continuation Despite Past Mismanagement
The road network maintenance project, initially valued at €1.5 million and intended for the entire municipality, was found to have had approximately 80% of its funds already allocated almost exclusively to the Meliteieon Municipal Unit (excluding Strongyli and Chlomou) by the previous administration.
Current Administration’s Intervention: The current administration inherited a remaining budget of €433,000. Despite this, they successfully completed works in Vasilatika-Korakades, interventions in Petriti, the Latzes-Argyrades road, and a section in Strongyli.
Result: A balance of €280,000 remains, and the contractor has been granted an extension until May 28, 2026, to finalize the project. The project is continuing, ensuring that the allocated funds are utilized effectively, despite the initial disproportionate spending.
Lefkimmi Indoor Gymnasium: Securing Completion with Additional Funding
The previous administration initiated the Lefkimmi Indoor Gymnasium project with an incomplete study and insufficient funding.
Current Administration’s Intervention: A new study was commissioned, and the funding was increased to €3,799,788.58.
Benefit: An additional €1,000,000 was secured, and €760,560.73 from the Municipality’s own resources have been reallocated for other projects in 2026. The project now has guaranteed funding for its completion.
Rural Road Construction: Rectifying Legal Gaps
A consortium of two contractors was initially responsible for rural road construction. However, one contractor subsequently declared bankruptcy, making project execution impossible. An attempt to substitute the contractor was not accepted by the Court of Auditors.
Solution: The municipality is proceeding immediately with a re-tender. A new contractor is expected to be in place within six months. The project remains active and will be fully implemented.
Electromobility: Restoring Legality
A procurement of €1.45 million for electromobility was found to have been tendered with significant inconsistencies, with different machinery specified in the study versus the tender announcement, and without prior approval from the Municipal Committee for modifying the Technical Data Sheet.
Action: The flawed tender has been canceled, and a new tender process will be initiated with full transparency and technical accuracy.
SMART CITY: Digital Transformation with Substantial Energy Upgrade
The “Smart City” project, officially contracted by the current Municipal Authority, has expanded beyond its initial limited scope to ensure maximum benefit for citizens.
Strategic Modification: The Technical Data Sheet was successfully modified to include the installation of 350 modern LED lighting fixtures.
Initiative and Funding: Through the municipality’s initiative and with €600,000 from its own resources, an additional 2,000 lighting fixtures will be replaced with LED technology.
Outcome: This initiative is transforming the municipality into a modern “smart city,” achieving significant energy upgrades and drastically reducing operating costs (electricity bills). The savings will be reinvested into other services for the citizens.
Conclusion
Mayor Kavvadias concluded by stating that South Corfu does not need “communication fireworks” but rather projects with secure funding and proper studies. The current Municipal Authority is working daily to “heal” the failures of the past and deliver the infrastructure that citizens deserve. These actions demonstrate a strategy that corrects mistakes, secures lost funds, and delivers projects with transparency and a clear plan.
