NEW YORK. A historic moment for Corfiot culture and Hellenism worldwide is unfolding in New York as the heart of the Ionian Sea beats strongly across the Atlantic. The ‘Spyros Samaras’ Philharmonic of Korakiana, invited by the Pan-Corfiot Association of America, is bringing the pulse of Corfu to the heart of the global diaspora, honoring the emblematic 250th anniversary of the birth of Greece’s first Governor, Ioannis Kapodistrias.
Commemorating Historical Milestones
These celebrations also carry the significant weight of marking 200 years since the heroic Exodus of Messolonghi, uniting historical memory with the vibrant spirit of the diaspora.
Under the experienced guidance of its conductor, Mr. Konstantinos Zervopoulos, the 100 musicians of the Philharmonic have offered moments of national pride, beginning on Thursday with the appearance of the Presidential Guard’s Evzones at the Hellenic Federation of Societies in Astoria.
Events Across New York
The events continued with particular splendor on Friday, April 24th, which began with a Doxology at the Holy Church of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and National Shrine at Ground Zero, a symbolic space of spiritual upliftment.
Subsequently, the Greek flag and the historic American “Betsy Ross” flag were raised into the sky at Bowling Green in Lower Manhattan. This ceremony, in the heart of Wall Street, was framed by the imposing presence of the Evzones, the melodies of the Korakiana Philharmonic, as well as traditional performances by the FILPA Larissa Dance Group and the Messolonghi Municipality Dance Ensemble.
High-Profile Attendees and Recognitions
The event was honored by the presence of high-ranking guests from the motherland, underscoring the unbreakable ties with the Diaspora. Among them were the Speaker of the Hellenic Parliament, Mr. Nikitas Kaklamanis, accompanied by MPs Thanasis Papathanasis and George Gavrilos, the Governor of Mount Athos, Alkiviadis Stefanis, the Regional Governors Nektarios Farmakis (Western Greece) and Ioannis Trepeklis (Ionian Islands), as well as the Mayor of the Holy City of Messolonghi, Spyros Diamantopoulos.
Today, Saturday, April 25th, the Regional Governor of the Ionian Islands, Ioannis Trepeklis, in a symbolic ceremony, honored the representatives of the four associations – the Pan-Corfiot, Erikousa, Mathraki, and Othonoi – as well as the Board of Directors of the Korakiana Philharmonic, recognizing their contribution to the preservation of tradition. Now, everything is ready for the magnificent culmination on Sunday, April 26th.
Grand Parade on 5th Avenue
The four Corfiot communities will parade united with the “Spyros Samaras” Philharmonic on 5th Avenue, in the largest parade of the Greek diaspora, filling Manhattan with the sounds and colors of Corfu. The rendezvous on 5th Avenue is at 1:00 p.m. to celebrate freedom and our historical heritage.
