The scent of ancient stone and the whisper of Venetian history hung in the air as students from the 2nd General High School of Larissa embarked on a four-day odyssey to Corfu. This wasn’t merely a school trip; it was a vibrant immersion into a living museum, a journey that transcended textbooks and brought the island’s rich tapestry of history, art, and tradition to life for the first-year high school students.
Day 1: Stepping into the Venetian Embrace of Old Town
Our adventure began in the beating heart of Corfu, its Historic Centre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As we navigated the ‘kantounia’ – the narrow, cobblestone alleys – a palpable Venetian aura enveloped us. We strolled through the iconic Liston and across Spianada, the largest square in the Balkans, marveling at the architectural grandeur with its emblematic archways. Hidden squares and old mansions, adorned with characteristic ochre hues and clotheslines fluttering in the breeze, revealed the island’s authentic charm, making us feel as though we had stepped onto a film set.
Day 2: A Deep Dive into Art, Faith, and Digital History
The second day unfolded as a cultural exploration, taking us to the city’s significant landmarks. We visited the Palace of St. Michael and St. George, an imposing edifice housing two treasures: the Museum of Asian Art, with its unique exhibits from the Far East, captivated the students, prompting reflections on the cultures of China and Japan. At the Municipal Art Gallery, we admired the works of prominent Ionian painters.
Our journey continued to the church of the island’s patron saint, Saint Spyridon. Its iconic bell tower, crowned with a red dome, stands as the city’s tallest, and the church’s interior, adorned with Ionian artistry, left a lasting impression. The day concluded with a visit to the Virtual History Museum, offering a contemporary glimpse into the past. Through digital applications and virtual reality, Corfu’s history sprang to life before our eyes, transforming learning into an engaging and enjoyable experience.
Day 3: Nature, Poetry, and Local Flavors
A sunny morning on the third day led us just outside the city center to explore Corfu’s most photographed spots. We visited Kanoni and the Vlacherna Monastery, soaking in the panoramic views of Pontikonisi and crossing the small bridge to reach the pristine white Vlacherna Monastery, a true symbol of Corfu.
Returning to the city, we paid homage to national poet Dionysios Solomos at the Solomos Museum, the house where he lived and created. This space, brimming with spirituality, evoked a profound sense of emotion in every Greek visitor. Our excursion culminated in the sweetest possible way: a visit to a local kumquat processing workshop. We learned how this ‘golden orange’ of Corfu is transformed into liqueurs and spoon sweets, sampling these unique flavors that we carried back as souvenirs.
A Refreshing Stop in Ioannina and a Night of Traditional Dance
On our return journey, a brief three-hour stop in Ioannina proved to be the perfect ‘period’ to our trip. This city, even in a short visit, manages to impart its tranquility to every visitor. Despite the limited time, a stroll along the Molos by Lake Pamvotida offered a refreshing breath of beauty. The plane trees reflected in the still waters and the view of the islet created an almost cinematic atmosphere. This was the moment when the return journey ceased to be tiring and became a pleasure, complete with a traditional sweet – a ‘gianniotiko baklavadaki’ is a must – before the final stretch home.
The highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the spontaneous gathering at a traditional tavern, where we met students from other high schools across Greece. It was here that tradition proved to be not a ‘museum piece’ but a vibrant and powerful force. As teachers and students joined hands in a circle, the distances between us vanished. Folk songs and traditional dances became our common language, and the rhythm and energy of the children swept everyone along. It was an evening reminiscent of a good old-fashioned celebration, one that makes you forget time and feel part of a large, close-knit company. “It’s impressive how a dance circle can unite different generations and people from every corner of the country in a matter of minutes.”
The excursion masterfully blended the aesthetic beauty of the Ionian Islands with knowledge, offering students a comprehensive understanding of Corfiot identity. The brief stop in Ioannina and the evening of dancing were undoubtedly the ‘medals’ of this journey. We extend our warmest congratulations to our students for their impeccable and exemplary behavior throughout the excursion’s activities!
