Athens Metro Line 5: A New Era for Urban Mobility in the Greek Capital
Athens, Greece – The expansion of transportation infrastructure remains a fundamental initiative for the Greek state, with metro projects at the forefront of current and future development plans. The mobility sector is a central focus for state actions, as evidenced by recent interventions and ongoing developments.
Current plans include major road projects, such as the Flyover bridge, expected to be one of the country’s most significant infrastructure developments, and the triple junction of Karamagka, which is projected to substantially contribute to decongesting Athens’ road network and improving traffic flow.
Focus on Public Transport: Metro Line 5 Takes Center Stage
Simultaneously, recent developments indicate a strong focus on public mass transit, with particular emphasis on the metro system. Central to this strategy is Line 4, a key project designed to serve areas that previously lacked direct access to stable public transport, alongside extensions to Line 2 with the addition of new stations. The primary goal is to significantly relieve traffic congestion on the capital’s central roads by shifting a substantial number of commuters from the road network to the underground transport system.
Furthermore, steps are already being taken to further expand the metro network, with plans encompassing future projects that extend beyond immediate needs, aiming to transform Athens over the coming decades.
The Vision for Athens’ Future: Metro Line 5’s Ambitious Route
Within this framework, the design of the new Metro Line 5 for Athens represents the next major undertaking for the capital’s urban transport. It aims to definitively alter the transport map for thousands of residents, with the design now entering a mature phase of development. Line 5 is envisioned to start near the nodal Evangelismos station, creating a crucial transport hub with Line 3 and the future Line 4. According to current designs by Hellenic Metro, its route will proceed towards Byron and Hymettus, continuing towards Ilioupoli and Nea Smyrni, with plans for a circular route encompassing other areas.
This project is deemed essential for decongesting densely populated areas that currently rely exclusively on bus lines and the Tram. Upon its completion, Line 5 will offer direct access to the center of Athens in less than 15 minutes from areas that currently require up to an hour of travel during peak hours.
Detailed Route and Connections of the Proposed Line 5
Regarding the practical implementation of the project, the new Line 5 could connect the Ambelokipi area, with a connection to Line 3, pass through Michalakopoulou and Pagrati, and link with Line 4 in Kaisariani. Subsequently, it would traverse Byron, connect with Line 2 at Agios Dimitrios station, and head towards Nea Smyrni, with a stop near the square with the Tram. Following this, it would continue towards Kallithea, where connections with Line 1 and the new branch to the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center are planned. Afterwards, it would pass through the Rouf station of the Suburban Railway and proceed west, with stops at the junction of P. Ralli and Kifissou, as well as at Agios Ioannis Rentis.
Future Extensions and Long-Term Impact
In the future, the new Line 5 will extend towards Dafni, with a connection to Line 3, and a station on Athinon Avenue at the height of Dafni, while it will follow Athinon Avenue with stops at the junction with Thivon and Kifissou. A station is also planned in Menidi, connecting with the railway and Line 2 at Athens Central Station, passing through Likovrysi (Line 1) and Alexandras Avenue with a connection to Line 4, before returning to Ambelokipi, forming a network with over 20 stations in total.
Naturally, this project, although already in the design phase, is being implemented with a view to the future and is expected to be a significant solution for Athens in the coming decades. Current projects primarily focus on Line 4 and the extensions of the existing network, with Line 5 still at the preliminary study level. Securing the necessary funding and finalizing the exact location of the stations are the next critical steps, making Line 5 the vision for the next generation of Athens and a significant pillar of Attica’s transport plan for the MST 2045 Network.
