With the participation of students from the 5th Grade of the Old Town Primary School, the successful educational program “Getting to know the Old Town of Corfu” concluded for the current school year. A total of 25 school classes from across the Prefecture of Corfu responded to the call and toured the Monument, forming a particularly positive assessment for the 2025-2026 academic year.
Educational Program Fosters Cultural Appreciation
The educational program “Getting to know the Old Town of Corfu” is an initiative of the Management Plan for the Old Town of Corfu Monument, aiming to raise awareness, knowledge, and love for cultural heritage. It includes a brief historical overview, an experiential walk, and an educational game at the “Kerkyras Asty” office in the urban monastery of Agia Aikaterini.
The program is approved by the Ministry of Education, specifically under act no. 13/10-3-2014, and is implemented by the “Kerkyras Asty” Service in cooperation with the Regional Directorate of Education of the Ionian Islands.
Inclusivity and Flexibility at the Core
Emphasis is placed on the flexibility and inclusive nature of the action so that it adapts to the needs of all students (e.g., wheelchair use) and no student is excluded from participating in the experiential, historical walk of the Program.
The Municipality of Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands expresses its warm thanks to the educators for their excellent cooperation, especially those from regional schools, who organized the transportation of students by bus.
Future Plans for Cultural Education
The Municipality renews its appointment with students for the next school year 2026-2027 in October, with the expectation of implementing more programs for our culture and heritage.
This initiative highlights the commitment of local authorities to preserving and promoting Corfu’s rich history, ensuring that future generations appreciate and understand its significance as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The program’s success underscores the importance of experiential learning in fostering a deeper connection to cultural landmarks and historical narratives. By engaging students directly with the Old Town, the program not only educates but also inspires a sense of stewardship for this invaluable heritage.
The collaboration between the Municipality and the Regional Directorate of Education of the Ionian Islands serves as a model for similar initiatives, demonstrating how concerted efforts can lead to meaningful educational outcomes and community engagement.
The positive feedback from participating schools and the high level of engagement from students are testaments to the program’s effectiveness in making history and culture accessible and engaging for young learners. The anticipation for the next academic year’s programs further solidifies the program’s vital role in Corfu’s educational landscape.
