Corfu Temperatures Set to Soar Next Week After Unseasonable Cold
Corfu, May 3, 2026 – After an unseasonably cold period, Corfu is preparing for a significant rise in temperatures next week, with forecasts indicating a return to more typical spring, and even early summer, conditions. This follows a notable cold front that brought lower-than-average temperatures for early May.
MeteoCorfu, a local weather forecasting service, had already predicted this upward trend. “From next week, the temperature will rise again, heading ‘full speed ahead’ towards the first summer values of May,” stated a previous forecast from April 27. Long-term data at that time suggested a high probability of temperatures reaching or even exceeding 26°C.
Abrupt Rise After Cold Spell Not Unusual
Many residents have been surprised by the abrupt temperature increase following the recent cold invasion. However, meteorologists explain that this phenomenon is entirely normal. The intense north-northeasterly circulation in previous days had kept the mercury “compressed.” Once this influence recedes, temperatures tend to surge rapidly.
Historical examples support this pattern: May Day in 1988 was particularly cold, but just a few days later, on May 6, Larissa recorded a scorching 36°C. Snowfall in May has even been observed in Ioannina.
Cold air masses are gradually retreating towards Turkey, while warmer air masses are moving in from northeastern Europe. This will lead to a noticeable temperature increase across the entire country, not just the Northern Ionian region. In the last 24 hours, warm air masses from North Africa undertook an impressive Ω-shaped journey, reaching from Portugal and Spain to France, Sweden, Russia (St. Petersburg), and Italy.
Further Increases Expected Towards Mid-May
From the end of next week – and especially from Thursday, May 7, to Friday, May 8 – the probabilities of an even greater temperature increase are rising. If the transfer of warmer air masses from North Africa via the central Mediterranean is confirmed, the upcoming weekend of May 9-10 could bring temperatures significantly higher than the seasonal norms.
Northern Ionian Forecast: Gradual Warming
For the Northern Ionian region, weather conditions are expected to remain stable with a gradual warming trend. Sunday will dawn with sunshine, excellent clarity, and a few low clouds. Temperatures will remain slightly below seasonal averages due to the northern current (Maistros) and strong northerly winds.
Winds in the Northern Ionian are expected to reach:
- Up to 7 Beaufort with gusts in the Diapontia Islands.
- 6 Beaufort in the northern and northwestern sections.
- 5 Beaufort from central Corfu to Paxos, and in very mountainous areas.
From Monday, May 4, to Friday, May 8, winds will gradually weaken and shift to southerly, with gusts of 4-5 Beaufort across the entire prefecture. Temperatures will begin to rise, bringing back more typical spring conditions.
Detailed Daily Forecast:
- Monday – Tuesday (May 4-5): The weather will be sunny with very good visibility across the island.
- Wednesday – Friday (May 6-8): Spring-like weather will persist, with scattered clouds, occasionally denser, creating a “dull” appearance at certain times. Sunny intervals will increase as the day progresses.
GFS & ECMWF ensembles indicate a further temperature rise at 850 hPa, to +10°C to +12°C in the Northern Ionian.
Provisional Maximum Temperature Estimates:
- Monday, May 4: Plains/Coastal: 21-22°C | Mountainous: 18-19°C
- Tuesday, May 5: Plains: 21-22°C | Mountainous: 19-20°C
- Wednesday, May 6: Plains: 22-23°C | Mountainous: 19-21°C
- Thursday, May 7: Plains: 25-26°C | Mountainous: 21-23°C
- Friday, May 8: Plains/Coastal: 26-27°C | Semi-mountainous/Mountainous: 23-24°C
Forecast Uncertainty
The warm scenario is still “under development,” as models have not yet fully converged. The coming days will show whether the warm air mass invasion will be as intense and prolonged as currently appears. However, the atmosphere is leaning towards warmer conditions, with the weekend of May 9-10 having an increased probability of significantly higher temperatures.
