Corfu: Fire at Special Education School Uncovers a Perilous Reality
A fire breaking out inside a school could be just another incident. However, in the case of ENEEGYL Corfu, it became much more: a warning that cannot be ignored.
The incident occurred over the weekend when a short circuit caused a fire in the building. The fire did not spread, mainly because the windows were closed, limiting oxygen supply. However, the fact that there were no injuries is attributed, as noted, solely to luck.
If the school had been operating at that moment, the picture could have been entirely different.
Images That Cause Concern
The inspection of the site revealed a harsh reality: melted electrical capacitors and coils, a burnt doorbell, blackened false ceilings, smoke-stained walls and corridors.
These are not minor damages. These are images that indicate the fire was intense and that the building was, even for a short time, in real danger. And yet, as alleged, the school lacks an adequate fire detection and protection system.
“A Potential Trap”
ELME Corfu leaves no room for misinterpretation. In its announcement, it refers to a building that functions as a “potential trap” for students and teachers. The concern is even greater considering it is a special education school. Students with special needs, who in an emergency require even more organized and safe evacuation conditions.
And yet, according to the complaints, the building’s layout not only does not facilitate, but hinders a safe exit. Students are forced to pass through one classroom to reach another, creating dangerous “dead ends” in case of need.
A School Beyond Its Limits
The fire incident does not appear to be an isolated event. On the contrary, it highlights long-standing problems that, as alleged, remain unresolved. The school operates with a severe lack of space: 13 classes are housed in just 9 small rooms. The result is conditions that are difficult to reconcile with the concept of education:
- Lessons in warehouses, corridors, and balconies
- Use of makeshift spaces for teaching
- Psychologist and social worker sessions without privacy
In such an environment, education becomes a daily struggle for adaptation.
“Luck” Is Not a Plan
The most alarming element is perhaps not the fire itself, but the fact that the avoidance of tragedy is attributed to luck. In a country that has experienced painful incidents due to infrastructure deficiencies and controls, the word “luck” cannot be a safety mechanism.
ELME points out that the authorities have been aware of the problems for years. Despite repeated reports, no substantial interventions have been made.
The Demands
Following the incident, the educational community is making a series of immediate demands:
- Full technical, electrical, and pre-seismic inspection of the building
- Restoration of fire damage
- Installation of a modern fire detection and protection system
- Finding or constructing a new, safe school building
These are not luxuries. These are basic necessities.
The case of ENEEGYL Corfu does not concern only one school. It touches upon a deeper issue: the place of public special education in the state’s priorities. When the most vulnerable children are educated in conditions that endanger their safety, then the problem is not technical. It is deeply social.
A Question That Cannot Wait Any Longer
The fire was extinguished. The smell of burning, however, remains. And with it, a question: How many more times will we need to be “lucky” to avoid casualties? The answer cannot be given with words. It can only be given with actions. And these, it seems, cannot wait any longer.
