Mandatory Plot Clearing in Corfu: Deadline Approaches for Fire Prevention

Corfu, April 19 – The mandatory clearing of plots and uncovered areas for the new fire season began on April 1, with a critical deadline approaching for property owners. All necessary work must be completed by June 15, and properties must be maintained in a clean state until October 31.

This initiative is part of broader fire prevention measures aimed at safeguarding communities during the high-risk period. Property owners, tenants, or usufructuaries are legally obligated to remove dry trees, branches, dry grass, shrub vegetation, and other flammable materials from their plots.

Who is Responsible for the Clearing?

The responsibility for undertaking the clearing work lies with the owner, tenant, or usufructuary of the plot. Individuals can choose to perform the work themselves or hire a specialized company. Municipalities that lack the necessary personnel are also engaging contractors through tenders to clear municipal plots.

According to Ioannis Mylonakis, Mayor of Agia Paraskevi, once the mandatory clearing deadline passes, municipal crews will inspect properties. In cases of non-compliance, the municipality will undertake the cleaning of the plot, charging the owner for the costs incurred, in addition to imposing a prescribed fine.

Declaration of Work and Penalties for Non-Compliance

All completed clearing work must be declared in the National Register of Preventive Fire Protection Measures for Properties. This ensures proper oversight and accountability.

Failure to comply with these regulations can result in significant financial penalties. The aim is to encourage proactive participation from all property owners in mitigating fire risks across the region.

Importance of Fire Prevention

The emphasis on mandatory plot clearing underscores the serious threat posed by wildfires, especially during the dry summer months. By removing flammable materials, the risk of fire ignition and rapid spread is significantly reduced, protecting lives, property, and the natural environment.

Local authorities urge all responsible parties to adhere to the deadlines and guidelines to ensure a safe and fire-free season for Corfu.
