John Legend to Headline Final Concert at Herodeon Before Major Restoration
Athens, April 16 – The American soul icon John Legend will headline the final concert at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus in Athens on June 30, before the famed conservatory closes its doors for a landmark three-year restoration. This performance is being hailed as a once-in-a-generation farewell to the iconic venue in its current form.
The concert will be part of Legend’s intimate An Evening of Songs & Stories tour. This will mark his first appearance in Greece and will be the last event the Odeon of Herodes Atticus will host before its extensive three-year restoration. The Roman amphitheater, carved into the southern slope of the Acropolis in 161 AD, has been a defining feature of Athenian summers for decades.
The Herodeon’s Last Night
For decades, the Athens & Epidaurus Festival has brought the world’s most celebrated artists and performers to the Herodeon, cementing its status as Greece’s most prestigious annual cultural event. As of July, restoration work will commence, and the emblematic conservatory will fall silent. Legend’s performance is the 15th event of this year’s festival and its last. The festival’s announcement describes it as "A modern legend, a legendary theater, and an undeniable momentum."
Thirteen Grammys and Counting
John Legend’s impressive résumé includes thirteen Grammy Awards, an Academy Award for Best Original Song (shared with Common for "Glory" from the 2014 civil rights film Selma), a Tony, and an Emmy. He is the first Black artist in history to achieve EGOT status, signifying a sweep of all four major entertainment prizes.
His familiar songs include "All of Me," "Ordinary People," "Love Me Now," "Minefields," and "Beauty and the Beast." These tracks have garnered billions of streams and contributed to his four platinum albums. Legend has collaborated with a diverse range of modern music luminaries, including Lauryn Hill, Ariana Grande, André 3000, Ludacris, Sam Smith, Herbie Hancock, Sergio Mendes, Meghan Trainor, DJ Khaled, and Clipse.
Stripped Down, Opened Up
The An Evening of Songs & Stories tour promises a stripped-back experience, with Legend performing alone at the piano. The performance will feature no elaborate production or orchestral arrangements, focusing solely on the compositions and the personal stories behind them. Each song acts as a waypoint in a personal narrative, linked to the experiences that have shaped him as an artist.
The festival’s announcement references the Latin word "legenda," meaning "those stories that must be told aloud." At the Herodeon, on its final night before restoration, this concept resonates as a fitting farewell.
