Corfu: DEPAn Proposes New Location for Open-Air Swimming Pool Project

Corfu, April 7, 2026 – The long-anticipated open-air swimming pool project in Corfu is facing a significant change of plans, with the Decentralized Administration of Peloponnese, Western Greece and the Ionian (DEPAn) proposing a new location. This development comes five months after an initial meeting where the NAOK facilities were unanimously supported as the preferred site for the project.

The initial decision to place the open-air swimming pool at the NAOK facilities was made during a meeting between DEPAn officials and representatives of the Central Corfu Municipality. At that time, all parties involved had committed to advancing the project, with a key aspect being the concession of the coastal front within the NAOK area.

Delays Prompt Reconsideration of Location

However, the promised progress, particularly regarding the coastal front concession, has not materialized. This lack of advancement has led to a critical juncture for the project, as its funding is now at risk of being lost if immediate action is not taken. Consequently, a new meeting is being held today to determine the future of the funding and the project’s viability.

In light of these delays, DEPAn has submitted a new proposal, suggesting Alykes as an alternative location for the open-air swimming pool. This recommendation aims to overcome the existing obstacles and ensure the project moves forward. The shift in proposed location highlights the challenges faced in large-scale public works and the need for flexibility in project management.

The Importance of the Project for Corfu

The open-air swimming pool is considered a vital infrastructure project for Corfu, expected to serve both local residents and contribute to the island’s sports tourism. Its completion would provide modern facilities for swimming and water sports, enhancing the quality of life for the community and offering new opportunities for athletic development.

The current situation underscores the urgency for a definitive decision to be made to prevent the loss of critical funding. Stakeholders are now tasked with evaluating the new proposal for Alykes and making a decision that will safeguard the project’s future. The outcome of today’s meeting will be crucial in determining whether this important facility will finally become a reality for the island of Corfu.

The Central Corfu Municipality and DEPAn are expected to issue further statements following their discussions, providing more details on the reasons behind the proposed change and the next steps for the open-air swimming pool project.
