Corfu, April 7, 2026 – The North Corfu Municipality has officially approved the establishment of a Unified Special Vocational High School (Gymnasium-Lyceum). This significant decision, made in collaboration with the Regional Directorate of Education of the Ionian Islands and the Directorate of Secondary Education of Corfu, marks a crucial step towards providing accessible education for students with special educational needs in the region.
Addressing a Long-Standing Educational Gap
According to the municipality’s announcement, this initiative directly responds to a pressing need that could no longer be ignored. Previously, students with special educational needs residing in North Corfu were compelled to undertake lengthy daily commutes to Corfu town to access appropriate educational facilities. The new school unit will alleviate this burden and ensure that these students have access to quality education closer to their homes.
The necessity for this new institution is further underscored by the anticipated continuation of studies for graduates from the 2nd Special Primary School, ensuring a seamless educational pathway for these students.
Strategic Co-location and Infrastructure
The new school is slated to be co-located with the Karousades Gymnasium. The municipal authority believes that the Karousades Gymnasium possesses the necessary classrooms, accessible spaces, and infrastructure to ensure the smooth and safe operation of the new special vocational school. This strategic co-location is expected to optimize resource utilization and facilitate a supportive learning environment.
Commitment to Staffing and Facilities
In parallel with the establishment approval, the municipality is actively preparing a comprehensive request to the Ministry of Education. This request will focus on securing the timely staffing of the new unit with the essential scientific personnel required to support the specialized educational programs. Furthermore, the North Corfu Municipality has committed to undertaking all necessary technical interventions to adapt the existing spaces at the Karousades Gymnasium, ensuring they are fully equipped to meet the specific requirements of the special vocational high school.
This proactive approach from the North Corfu Municipality, in conjunction with educational authorities, highlights a dedication to inclusive education and the well-being of all students within its jurisdiction. The establishment of this new school is expected to significantly improve educational opportunities and quality of life for students with special educational needs and their families in North Corfu.
