Athens, March 28 – Athens International Airport (AIA) is once again joining the global “Earth Hour” initiative organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) today, March 28, 2026. As part of this worldwide movement to raise awareness about climate change, the airport will dim lights across its facilities, demonstrating its commitment to environmental sustainability.
AIA’s Participation in Earth Hour 2026
From 8:30 PM to 9:30 PM local time, AIA will implement several measures to mark Earth Hour. Notably, operations on its western runway (03L/21R) will be temporarily suspended for one hour. All incoming and outgoing flights will continue to be serviced without disruption via the eastern runway, ensuring no impact on passenger travel.
In addition to the runway adjustment, lighting will be reduced across various airport areas, including buildings, parking facilities, and selected operational zones. Passengers within the terminal will be kept informed about the initiative through public announcements and digital display screens. Several retail outlets located within the airport are also expected to participate by dimming their own lights.
Global Movement for Climate Action
Earth Hour, now in its 20th year, is a symbolic global movement that encourages individuals, businesses, and institutions to switch off non-essential lights for one hour. This collective action aims to draw attention to the urgent need for climate action and promote environmental awareness worldwide. Athens Airport’s participation aligns with similar efforts being undertaken across Greece and internationally.
Beyond Earth Hour: A Broader Sustainability Strategy
AIA’s involvement in Earth Hour is a component of its comprehensive and ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship. The airport is actively implementing a range of measures designed to reduce its ecological footprint, reinforcing its position as a leader in sustainable airport operations.
The airport holds Airport Carbon Accreditation at Level 4+, a certification that reflects its significant efforts in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and engaging its partners in broader climate action initiatives. This achievement underscores AIA’s dedication to measurable environmental performance.
Furthermore, as part of its ambitious “Route 2025” initiative, Athens International Airport has publicly committed to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions. This long-term goal is supported by strategic investments in renewable energy sources, including the installation of photovoltaic systems and advanced battery storage solutions across its premises.
Other key sustainability measures being adopted by AIA include the phased transition of the majority of its vehicle fleet to electric models and the widespread implementation of energy-efficient technologies throughout its extensive infrastructure. These initiatives collectively contribute to a substantial reduction in energy consumption and carbon emissions.
Airport officials have confirmed that all actions undertaken for Earth Hour will be executed in strict compliance with all safety regulations and protocols, ensuring that there will be no disruption to the airport’s flight operations or passenger safety.
With millions of people expected to participate globally, this year’s Earth Hour serves as a powerful reminder of the collective responsibility to address climate change and build a more sustainable future.
