Corfu, March 23, 2026 – The Ionian Islands Regional Governor, Giannis Trepeklis, has officially approved the inclusion of the project for the restoration of the historic Rolina building in Corfu. This initiative, part of the ‘Ionian Islands 2021-2027’ Program, represents a substantial investment in the cultural heritage of Corfu and the wider Ionian Islands region.
Strategic Investment in Cultural Heritage
The project, with a total co-financed public expenditure of 5,907,018.01 euros, will be funded by the European Regional Development Fund. It is designed as a targeted intervention with high added value for the cultural infrastructure of Corfu and the Ionian Islands Region as a whole.
The beneficiaries of the project are the Directorate for the Protection & Restoration of Modern & Contemporary Monuments and the Ephorate of Antiquities of Corfu. The Rolina building, recognized as a work of art and a historical listed monument (Government Gazette 161/B’/15.03.1990), is an emblematic element of the cultural heritage of Corfu town.
Project Scope and Objectives
Its restoration and reuse are part of a broader plan for its functional and thematic connection with the Archaeological Museum of Corfu, enhancing the area’s role as a unified cultural hub. The project includes the following sub-projects:
- The restoration study of the building and the preparation of tender documents.
- The complete restoration of the building, including stabilization, rearrangement, modernization of infrastructure, and conservation of decorative elements.
- The packaging and repatriation of antiquities and the organization of a photographic and archival exhibition.
- The procurement of warehouse equipment.
- The provision of antiquity transport services.
“The inclusion of the Rolina building restoration project represents a conscious political choice for the Regional Authority: to invest in culture as a key pillar of sustainable development, extroversion, and identity of the Ionian Islands,” emphasized the Regional Governor of the Ionian Islands, Giannis Trepeklis. He added, “We are highlighting a historical monument, bringing it back to life, and functionally integrating it into a broader cultural ecosystem, in direct connection with the Archaeological Museum of Corfu. In this way, we are creating new possibilities for utilizing our cultural heritage, enhancing the visitor experience, and at the same time supporting the local economy.”
Connecting Culture with Development
The Ionian Islands Region is implementing its program by connecting culture with development, quality of life, and the international promotion of its islands. “We are moving forward with substantive projects, with a clear footprint and measurable results for local communities,” concluded Mr. Trepeklis.
