Athens Carnival: Traditional Celebration with Bagpipes and Drums in Pagrati

Athens, February 14 – Pagrati, a bustling district of Athens, recently hosted a lively traditional Carnival celebration, marking one of the most vibrant events organized by the Municipality of Athens. The streets resonated with the sounds of bagpipes and the rhythmic beats of percussion instruments, drawing a large crowd of participants and spectators.

The initiative, spearheaded by Lefteris Grigoriou and Global Daoulia, successfully transformed the streets into an open-air stage for traditional folklore. The procession commenced at 11:00 a.m. from Prophet Elias Square, with the musical group making its way towards Varnava Square, captivating passersby in a spontaneous revelry. The festivities culminated at the courtyard of the Goulandris Museum on Eratosthenous Street.

The Rhythm of the Day: “Ta Krousta tis Taki”

A pivotal role in creating the festive atmosphere was played by the percussion group “Ta Krousta tis Taki.” One of its members, reflecting on their participation, encapsulated the spirit of the day: “Today is Carnival, so what did we do? We played music and sang.” He also shared his passion for the instrument, noting, “I started playing percussion at 5 years old.” He described the journey, stating that the group began “from Prophet Elias, by his great grace, and we made our way down to the Goulandris Museum.”

Athens in Carnival Spirit

According to the official report from the Municipality of Athens, these events aimed to highlight authentic Greek folklore. The Mayor, Haris Doukas, in a statement regarding the spirit of the season, emphasized that the city was filled with colors and melodies from Kypseli to Votanikos. “With respect for our popular tradition, but also with a playful disposition, the Municipality of Athens showcased the richness of Greek Carnival folklore,” Mr. Doukas underlined, thanking the artists who transformed every neighborhood into a festive hub.

Roxana Bei, President of OPANDA (Organization of Culture, Sports and Youth of the Municipality of Athens), focused on the human aspect of the events, noting that it was an opportunity for citizens to meet, laugh, and rediscover their childlike wonder. “This year’s program was the result of collective work with the communities of the Municipality of Athens, offering a proposal that combined authenticity with a modern perspective,” said Ms. Bei.

The merriment, however, did not end with the conclusion of the event in Pagrati. The musicians renewed their appointment for the following day, promising: “Tomorrow we play at the most amazing carnival. The Metaxourgeio Carnival!”

This traditional “awakening” with bagpipes and drums in Pagrati is part of a broader series of Carnival events across Athens, aimed at preserving and promoting Greek cultural heritage while offering joyful experiences to residents and visitors alike. The success of this year’s celebrations sets a high bar for future Carnival festivities in the Greek capital.

The next major Carnival event in Metaxourgeio is scheduled for February 14, 2026, promising another vibrant display of traditional music and dance.
