Athens, February 9 – The Academy of Athens has launched a new global initiative, inaugurating the International Community of Academies with an opening symposium on February 9-10. This event marks a significant step in fostering interdisciplinary dialogue among leading figures in science, the humanities, and the arts worldwide.
Global Scope and Centenary Celebration
The initiative commences with the participation of 36 academies, immediately establishing its global reach. This forum aims to cultivate sustained discussion on the pressing challenges of our time, addressing how technological, environmental, and social transformations are reshaping contemporary societies, rather than seeking immediate conclusions.
The launch coincides with the Academy of Athens’ 100th anniversary, signaling a new chapter in its commitment to international cooperation and intellectual exchange.
Focus on Climate Change and Cultural Heritage
A primary focus of the symposium is the profound impact of climate change on Mediterranean monuments of cultural and natural heritage. Climate stress is increasingly recognized as a serious threat to the resilience of sites with exceptional historical value.
Professor Christos Zerefos, Greece’s National Representative for Climate Change and Chair of the International Community of Academies, will present key findings from a recent study. This research assesses the vulnerability of Mediterranean UNESCO heritage monuments, evaluating their exposure to risk through six climate indicators and a seismic risk index, providing a comprehensive overview of the dangers facing the region’s invaluable heritage.
Culture, Power, and Classical Thought
The program also delves into the enduring dialogue between culture and power. Academician Theodore D. Papanghelis will explore how literature engages with authority and historical continuity, tracing poetic timelessness from archaic and lyric Greek traditions to the literary production of the Augustan era.
Bridging classical thought and modern science, mathematician Athanassios S. Fokas will examine how foundational concepts of ancient Greek philosophy can illuminate contemporary understandings of human cognition and behavior. Through these diverse perspectives, the symposium aims to establish Athens as a new crossroads for global intellectual exchange.
Future of the Forum
The International Community of Academies is envisioned as a permanent platform for continuous discussion and collaboration, reflecting the Academy of Athens’ commitment to addressing complex global issues through a multidisciplinary lens.
The initiative underscores the importance of academic institutions in confronting the challenges of the 21st century and promoting a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness of science, culture, and the environment.
The Athens Academy continues to be a pivotal institution in higher education and research, as evidenced by recent achievements such as the University of Athens rising 100 places in global rankings and the University of Crete earning major distinction on global scientist rankings.
