Corfu Braces for Severe Weather: Heavy Rains and Winds Up to 8 Beaufort Expected

Corfu, Greece – The island of Corfu is preparing for a significant shift in weather patterns, with forecasters predicting heavy rains and strong winds reaching up to 8 Beaufort from Wednesday through Friday. This severe weather is attributed to a low-pressure system originating from Northwest Africa, which will also bring warmer air masses to the region.

Weather Overview: Tuesday to Friday

The current forecast indicates a gradual intensification of weather conditions:

  • Tuesday: Moderate rainfall is expected throughout the day, accompanied by southeasterly winds up to 4 Beaufort. Humidity levels will be noticeably high.
  • Wednesday: The onset of severe weather is anticipated from early Wednesday morning. Heavy rains will persist throughout the day, with winds strengthening from the southeast to 6 Beaufort in the morning and afternoon. By midnight, as the low-pressure system moves closer, winds are expected to intensify further, reaching up to 7 Beaufort, and even 8 Beaufort in the western parts of the island. Temperatures will range from 11°C to 15°C. Low levels of African dust are also possible.
  • Thursday: Rainfall will continue, but the primary concern will be the exceptionally strong winds, which are forecast to reach up to 8 Beaufort. Temperatures will be slightly higher, ranging from 11°C to 16°C.
  • Friday: The severe weather conditions are expected to gradually subside.

Meteorological Factors at Play

The approaching low-pressure system from Northwest Africa will carry warm air masses, leading to an increase in both maximum and minimum temperatures. Despite this, significant amounts of precipitation are expected. Interestingly, low or negligible levels of African dust are predicted due to the influence of cold air masses from Russia.

Furthermore, a high-pressure system, or anticyclone, currently situated over Siberia, is projected to shift south and west. Due to its extensive reach, this anticyclone will impact Europe. However, the Ionian Islands, including Corfu, will not experience a temperature drop as the dominant warm air masses from Africa will maintain higher temperatures.

Detailed Forecast for Wednesday

Wednesday is poised to be a day of strong rainfall. Winds will be reinforced from the morning until the afternoon, blowing from southeasterly directions at up to 6 Beaufort. After the afternoon, a temporary decrease in wind strength is expected, with maximum gusts reaching 4 Beaufort. However, from midnight onwards, as the low-pressure system advances towards the area, winds will once again increase, reaching 7 Beaufort and even 8 Beaufort in the western sections of the island. The temperature will reach a maximum of 15°C, with a minimum of 11°C. Low percentages of African dust are anticipated during the day, and humidity will be high, reaching 75% by night.

Forecasting Challenges

Meteorologist Antonis Ferentinos emphasizes that the weather analysis will be conducted gradually and with caution. This approach is necessary due to the rapid movement of the low-pressure system and the complex interplay of various ground and atmospheric factors. Such a careful approach aims to minimize forecast deviations and provide the most accurate predictions possible.

Residents and visitors to Corfu are advised to stay informed about the latest weather updates and take necessary precautions during this period of intense weather.
