Corfu, December 2 – The Permanent Residents’ Association of Corfu Old Town has issued a statement following its intervention at the Municipal Council meeting held on Monday, December 1. The association raised critical points concerning the management and future of Garitsa Grove, a vital public space for both residents and visitors.
Garitsa Grove: A Public Space Under Scrutiny
The Association emphasized the significance of Garitsa Grove as one of the few remaining free public spaces for recreation and leisure on the island. They stressed that any decisions regarding its operation, use, and management directly impact the entire local community.
Consultation Process Unfulfilled
During a previous Municipal Council meeting, a proposal by the Popular Rally for a consultation process was accepted. This process was intended to involve municipal faction leaders, resident associations, and professionals in collectively shaping the Grove’s operational regulations. However, the Association noted that this consultation did not materialize, resulting in the final form of the regulations being determined solely by the Municipal Authority.
Key Proposals and Concerns from the Residents’ Association
The Association proposed the addition of a provision to classify the Grove as saturated with professional activities. This aims to prevent any future attempts to reclassify or further burden the area. They reminded the Council of a serious issue that arose earlier in the year due to the Municipal Authority’s actions, and not those of residents or local businesses, the resolution of which remains uncertain. The Association deemed any direct or indirect attempt to create antagonism between residents and professionals, or any targeting of residents by the Municipal Authority, as unacceptable.
While generally agreeing with most of the proposed regulations in principle, the Association expressed strong reservations regarding Article 12. They highlighted that this article relies on conflicting legislative provisions, making the drafting and potential future consequences of this specific article the sole responsibility of the Municipal Authority.
Exclusion from Future Discussions
The Association requested to participate in all future discussions or processes concerning the Old Town and Garitsa Grove, to present their views and proposals. However, following the meeting, a subsequent gathering was scheduled for Thursday, involving the Mayor, faction leaders, the “Alsos” association, and shopkeepers. In an apparent attempt to discredit the Permanent Residents’ Association, the Mayor stated that “the Old Town Association is for the Old Town and will not participate.” This stance has been criticized by the Association, who question the logic that those not directly related to the Old Town should have no say in its affairs, contrasting it with common practice.
The Importance of Inclusive Dialogue
The Association’s exclusion from this crucial follow-up meeting has sparked debate about the transparency and inclusivity of decision-making processes concerning public spaces in Corfu. The ongoing situation underscores the tension between municipal authorities and local community groups regarding urban planning and the preservation of communal assets.
The residents of Corfu are now left to judge the rationale behind the Mayor’s decision, as the future of Garitsa Grove, a cherished public resource, continues to be a subject of intense local interest and debate.
