CORFU. A significant development for Corfu is the issuance of a new proclamation for the recruitment of eighty-six (86) Border Guards, who are expected to substantially strengthen the services of the Corfu Police Directorate and upgrade the operation of critical structures.
Historic Reinforcement for Corfu’s Security
Out of the new Border Guards, thirty-six (36) will be stationed at the ‘Ioannis Kapodistrias’ Airport, while fifty (50) will staff the Corfu Police Directorate. This marks the first time that both the Police Directorate and the Airport have been reinforced with such a large number of new personnel, a fact that will decisively contribute to better service for citizens and visitors.
This development follows last year’s significant reinforcement of the Corfu Fire Department with the establishment of the 15th Special Forest Operations Unit (EMODE), which was based in Corfu and staffed with forty (35) ‘forest commandos’, who have already completed one and a half years of operational action on the front lines of forest firefighting.
Application Requirements and Timeline
Regarding the participation requirements, candidates must be high school graduates of all types, must not have exceeded their 28th year of age (born on or after 1/1/1997), and must possess local residency. The submission process for supporting documents will take place from November 26 to December 15, 2025.
Government Officials Emphasize Importance of New Recruitment
As stated by the Deputy Minister of Shipping and Island Policy and New Democracy MP, Stefanos Gkikas: “The reinforcement with 86 new Border Guards constitutes a historic intervention for the security and effective operation of Police Services in Corfu. This decision is one of the largest and most significant staffing interventions ever carried out in the Regional Unit of Corfu.”
This substantial increase in personnel is expected to significantly improve the efficiency of border control and general policing duties on the island, especially given Corfu’s status as a popular tourist destination. The additional staff at the airport will streamline entry and exit procedures, enhancing the overall experience for travelers, while the increased presence within the Police Directorate will bolster public safety and law enforcement capabilities across the island.
The move is part of broader government efforts to strengthen security forces in key regions, recognizing the unique challenges and needs of island communities and popular tourist hubs. The long-term impact of this recruitment is anticipated to be a marked improvement in both the perception and reality of safety for residents and visitors alike, contributing to Corfu’s appeal as a secure and well-managed destination.
