Athens, November 27 – The city of Athens is gearing up for its annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony, a cherished tradition that officially ushers in the holiday season. Mayor Haris Doukas will preside over the event, illuminating the 19-meter fir tree on Syntagma Square this Thursday afternoon.
A Majestic Fir and Festive Preparations
The centerpiece of the celebration, a towering 19-meter fir tree, hails from the controlled forest cultivation in Chryssovitsi, Arcadia. Its journey to Athens received the green light from the Vytina forestry service, ensuring sustainable practices. This impressive tree will stand as a beacon of holiday cheer in the heart of the capital.
A Day of Music and Entertainment
The festivities are scheduled to commence at 5 p.m. with a performance by the City of Athens Big Band, which will serenade attendees with a selection of Christmas music. At 6 p.m., the Philharmonic Orchestra will add to the celebratory atmosphere, marching from the Ermou Street fountain to Syntagma Square and encouraging the public to join their procession. Following these musical acts, renowned singer and actor Panos Mouzourakis will take the stage, presenting a live Christmas show at the Square until 8:30 p.m., promising an evening of entertainment for all.
Mayor Doukas to Light Up Athens
The much-anticipated moment will arrive at 7:30 p.m. when Mayor Doukas gives the signal to light the magnificent Christmas tree. Simultaneously, 21,000 meters of decorative string lights will illuminate Syntagma Square, as well as the bustling streets of Panepistimiou, Stadiou, Ermou, and Vassilissis Sofias Avenue. The pedestrian walkway of Ermou Street will be adorned with lavish decorations, further enhancing the festive ambiance. Mitropoleos Square will also feature a Nativity prop, adding a traditional touch to the holiday decor.
Sustainable and Spectacular Decorations
In a commitment to environmental responsibility, all the lights used for the city’s Christmas decorations are low-energy LED technology. This initiative reflects Athens’ dedication to sustainability while ensuring a dazzling display for residents and visitors alike. Furthermore, starting December 15, the Omonia Square fountain will enchant onlookers with a captivating water show synchronized with music, adding another layer of magic to the holiday season.
A Second Life for the Christmas Tree
After the holiday season concludes, the fir tree will not go to waste. It will be thoughtfully donated to the Fine Arts University, where it will be repurposed for wood artworks, extending its life and contributing to artistic endeavors. This sustainable approach highlights the city’s commitment to responsible resource management.
Ongoing Efforts to Enhance the Holiday Experience
The annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony is a cornerstone of Athens’ holiday celebrations, drawing crowds from across the city and beyond. The meticulous planning and execution of the event, from the selection of the tree to the diverse entertainment program, underscore the city’s dedication to creating a memorable and joyous experience for everyone during this special time of year.
