Corfu, November 26 – Local shops and the market in Corfu are gearing up to welcome this year’s major sales event, Black Friday. The Corfu Trade Association has released a statement regarding the upcoming promotional period, which marks its tenth anniversary in the Greek market since its introduction from abroad.

Black Friday and Cyber Monday: A Decade in Greece

Black Friday, scheduled for November 28, has been a fixture in the Greek market for a decade. This international institution, along with Cyber Monday (December 1, 2025, an exclusively online promotional event), is a one-day consumer promotion that applies to the entire market and businesses, regardless of their size. Participation, however, is not mandatory. These events traditionally signal the beginning of the Christmas holiday season.

For businesses choosing to participate, the legal framework governing promotional activities is clear, and all participants are urged to adhere to it with great care. The Association emphasized the importance of transparency and fair practices during these sales.

Support Local Businesses: A Call from the Trade Association

The Corfu Trade Association is taking this opportunity to remind consumers that genuine offers, personal contact, and quality can be found in local shops. The Association calls upon consumers to support their neighborhood stores, the employees and their families, and the small local businesses that keep the city vibrant throughout the year. This call comes amidst a challenging economic environment characterized by increased costs and limited purchasing power, yet with optimism for a gradual recovery in retail.

The Association highlighted that local professionals offer quality products and personalized service with experience, reliability, and consistency, making the shopping experience more human and trustworthy.

Optional Sunday Opening and the Debate

In line with this, and according to legislation (Article 16 of Law 4177/2013), commercial stores are permitted to optionally operate on the Sunday following the last Friday of November. Therefore, shops in Corfu can, at their discretion, open on Sunday, November 30, 2025, with a suggested operating schedule of 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

However, by decision of its Board of Directors, the Corfu Trade Association maintains its long-standing position regarding Sunday closure, recommending that businesses and its members remain CLOSED on Sunday, November 30, 2025. This stance reflects a broader debate within the retail sector about the balance between commercial activity and employee well-being, as well as the desire to maintain traditional Sunday rest.

The upcoming Black Friday is expected to draw significant consumer interest, providing a boost to the local economy. The Corfu Trade Association’s message underscores the value of community support and responsible consumerism during these promotional events.
