Athens, November 25 – Electra Hotels & Resorts officially announced the grand reopening of the fully redesigned Electra Rhythm Athens on Monday, following an extensive 8 million euro overhaul. This significant investment positions the historic Ermou Street property as the group’s vibrant, youth-oriented offering within its Athenian collection.
A Historic Property Reimagined for a New Generation
The 101-room hotel, originally the first property opened by the Electra group in 1965, underwent a complete reconstruction. It closed for six months in late 2024 and officially reopened in May of this year. Since its reopening, the hotel has achieved consistently high occupancy levels, often exceeding 90 percent across all Electra hotels in Athens, as confirmed by CEO & Vice President Yiannis Retsos.
Strategically located just steps from Syntagma Square, the new Electra Rhythm Athens showcases a lighter, more contemporary design aesthetic. This modern approach is specifically crafted to appeal to younger travelers and urban audiences seeking a dynamic city-break experience.
According to Retsos, the comprehensive redesign extended beyond mere aesthetics, redefining the hotel’s brand and overall guest experience. Every facet, from the interior design to the range of services offered, has been meticulously updated to meet the evolving expectations of today’s discerning city-break traveler.
Retsos further noted that the revamped property is already successfully attracting a diverse mix of guests. Greek visitors currently account for 25 percent of stays, while a strong international demand is being driven by travelers from Israel, the United States, and France. This trend aligns with the Greek capital’s steadily rising profile as a premier European tourism destination.
Despite the hotel’s success and Athens’ growing popularity, Retsos highlighted a critical challenge: the city’s infrastructure continues to lag behind the increasing demand. “Athens has climbed compared to other European capitals in terms of room rates, but this is not supported by infrastructure,” he stated.
He cited persistent issues such as inadequate cleanliness, limited pedestrian accessibility in certain areas, and the long-standing absence of organized parking facilities for tourist coaches, which collectively impact the overall visitor experience.
Electra Hotels & Resorts’ Ambitious Investment Program Exceeds €55 Million
The reopening of Electra Rhythm Athens is a key component of Electra Hotels’ broader investment strategy, which currently allocates over 55 million euros towards various projects across its properties in Athens, Thessaloniki, and Rhodes.
A significant portion of this program is dedicated to the group’s seventh hotel, a substantial 35 million euro, 165-room five-star property currently under construction in central Thessaloniki. This ambitious project, which experienced delays due to significant archaeological findings during excavation, is now projected to open in the summer of 2027, strategically timed ahead of the Thessaloniki International Fair.
In Athens, the Electra Palace Athens in Plaka is also undergoing a multi-phase refurbishment. This renovation, scheduled to take place during the winter seasons of 2024 to 2026, will encompass the hotel’s communal areas and the first 50 guest rooms, ensuring a continuous enhancement of its facilities.
Furthermore, on the island of Rhodes, a 13-million-euro modernization of the Electra Palace Rhodes was successfully completed last year, with subsequent plans for future expansion already in development.
With a rich history spanning six decades in Greek hospitality, Electra Hotels & Resorts is also preparing for a comprehensive brand redesign in 2026. This extensive rebranding initiative will span all seven of its properties, including its hotels in Kefalonia, Thessaloniki, and the prominent Electra Metropolis in Athens, aiming to unify and modernize the group’s image across its diverse portfolio.
