Athens, 18 November – The Greek capital is set to host one of the most significant scientific events of the year, the 34th Panhellenic Surgical Congress & International Surgical Forum, scheduled from November 19 to 23, 2025. Organized by the Hellenic Surgical Society, the five-day event will take place at the Megaron Athens International Conference Centre.
Over 1,500 Delegates Expected
More than 1,500 Greek and international delegates are anticipated to participate in the congress. The official Opening Ceremony, open to the public, will be held on Wednesday, November 19, at 7:15 PM, featuring Academic Professor Stamatios Krimizis, a leading international figure in astrophysics and space science, as the keynote speaker.
Comprehensive Program with Practical Training
The congress boasts a dense and thorough program, including seminars, pre-congress events, and five specialized workshops. These aim to train participants in modern surgical techniques and technological applications. Organizers emphasize that combining theoretical knowledge with hands-on practice is a fundamental tool for the continuous education and development of all surgeons, both new and experienced.
New Surgeons in the Spotlight
This year, the congress introduces the innovative “Meet the Program Directors” initiative for the first time, scheduled for Friday, November 21. New surgeons, residents, and medical students will have the opportunity to meet Program Directors from major international surgical programs and discuss training, research, and career prospects abroad.
Concurrently, the interactive Residents’ Quiz – “The Surgical Arena” offers a unique scientific competition experience. Participants will test their knowledge and reflexes in general surgery topics within a competitive and team-oriented environment. This event has garnered significant interest among the new generation of surgeons, with 23 teams of residents from across Greece having registered, exceeding the Organizing Committee’s expectations.
Investing in Research
A special highlight of the program is the 2nd Surgical Research Day, featuring 25 residents from all over Greece. The research protocols presented will be evaluated by a special committee, with the Best Protocol receiving €3,000 in funding. Its results will be presented at the next 35th Panhellenic Surgical Congress.
Furthermore, the Hellenic Journal of Surgery (HJS), the journal of the Hellenic Surgical Society, is initiating an important international collaboration with the international journal Surgery. This partnership will be inaugurated with a joint competition during the 34th Panhellenic Surgical Congress, which includes:
- 25 selected papers in total
- 8 papers for full-text publication in a special issue of Surgery
- 17 papers for abstract publication in a special issue of HJS
- 5 selected papers for presentation in a special session of the 34th Panhellenic Surgical Congress.
International Presence and Multilevel Collaboration
This year’s event strengthens the international outreach of the Greek surgical community, with the participation of significant international societies such as the Association for Academic Surgery (AAS), the ACS – Greek Chapter (American College of Surgeons), the SSAT (Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract), the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd), and the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland (ASGBI).
Additionally, many other Greek specialized scientific societies actively participate in the congress’s scientific program with dedicated roundtables.
Messages from the Organizing Committee
The Presidents of the Organizing Committee, Professor Nikolaos I. Nikiteas, Dr. Konstantinos Alexiou, and Dr. Nikolaos Sikalias, emphasize that with the 34th Panhellenic Surgical Congress, the Hellenic Surgical Society aims to respond in the best possible way to the needs of Greek surgeons for continuous postgraduate training and information. They also seek to highlight the challenges facing the field: the integration of artificial intelligence into medical practice, developments in molecular biology and oncology, population aging, the increase in surgical patients’ comorbidities, and the safety of medical tools and procedures.
They further stress that the training of young surgeons remains a constant priority at all Hellenic Surgical Society congresses. This year’s event also aims to foster open and fruitful dialogue among public, private, and university sector surgeons, through which, with the participation of international experts, scientific synergy in the care of surgical patients will evolve.
Open to Students
It is worth noting that participation in the congress is free for medical students, further strengthening the connection between the scientific community and the new generation.
