British Mum Takes Control of Chaotic Crowd at Corfu Airport

Faye Williams, an events company boss from Exeter, Devon, took control of a chaotic situation at Corfu International Airport on 24 October when multiple flight departures were called simultaneously, creating dangerous crowding conditions among approximately 2,000 passengers.

Crisis at Departure Gates

Mrs Williams and her family were preparing to return home from their holiday when they encountered severe congestion at the airport’s 14 departure gates. Several flights had been called to the same gate at the same time, creating a situation where passengers were unable to move through the crowds.

“The crowd started to get really tight to the point everything had ground to a halt,” Mrs Williams explained. The situation had become so severe that normal airport operations had effectively stopped.

Staff Member on Verge of Tears

When Mrs Williams reached the departure desk, she found a single airport employee attempting to manage the massive crowd. The staff member appeared to be on the “verge of tears” according to Mrs Williams, overwhelmed by the scale of the problem.

Drawing on her professional experience managing large numbers of people at events, Mrs Williams offered to help. After explaining her plan to the employee, she was given access to the tannoy system at the departure desk.

“I got the crowd’s attention, which was no mean feat, because there were a lot of people in the airport, and I said to everyone, ‘unless we work as a team, no one is getting their flights’,” she said.

Creating Order from Chaos

Mrs Williams implemented a systematic approach to managing the crowd. Working with the airport employee, she received flight information one by one and announced each flight number over the tannoy system.

“I created a channel through the middle of the crowd and made sure they kept that open,” she explained. “I was dangling their flights in front of them as a way of getting them to calm down, not panic and move back and let everybody through.”

The strategy proved effective, with passengers cooperating to allow those whose flights had been called to pass through the crowd safely.

Flight Bingo and Crowd Cooperation

The atmosphere shifted as Mrs Williams continued her announcements. “It became like ‘flight bingo’ because when I read out a flight, the crowd cheered,” she said.

She successfully managed to process eight flights before needing to catch her own departure. As she left to board her flight, the crowd applauded her efforts.

“I was clapped out of the airport, which was lovely but hideously embarrassing,” Mrs Williams said. “It was one of the most random afternoons of my life.”

Video Goes Viral

Mrs Williams’s daughter, Nova Williams, recorded video footage of her mother managing the crowd and reading out flight numbers over the tannoy system. The video was subsequently shared on social media, where it has reached over one million views.

The viral video has drawn attention to both the challenging situation at the airport and Mrs Williams’s quick thinking and professional approach to resolving the crisis.

Airport Explains Staffing Issues

A spokesperson for Corfu Airport acknowledged the incident as a “challenging moment” and expressed gratitude to Mrs Williams for her assistance.

According to the airport, the departure area became severely congested following a “sudden reduction” in staffing levels at passport control. The airport clarified that passport control operations are managed independently of the airport itself.

“This was an isolated and exceptional incident that did not impede the proper communication of information to travellers,” the spokesperson stated.

The airport emphasized that the situation was “beyond the airport’s control” and thanked passengers for their patience and cooperation.

“We deeply appreciate everyone’s patience and cooperation while our staff worked to assist all passengers to the best of their ability during an unforeseen situation beyond the airport’s control,” the spokesperson added.

Professional Experience Put to Use

Mrs Williams attributed her ability to manage the situation to her professional background. As the owner of an events company, she regularly deals with large crowds and complex logistics.

“Due to my job, I was used to dealing with large numbers of people and was glad I was able to use her skills to help,” she said.

Her experience allowed her to quickly assess the situation, develop a solution, and communicate effectively with both airport staff and the assembled passengers.

Isolated Incident, Says Airport

Corfu Airport stressed that the 24 October incident was “isolated and exceptional” and not representative of normal operations at the facility.

The airport serves as a major gateway for tourists visiting the popular Greek island of Corfu, particularly during the peak summer season and extending into autumn when many British holidaymakers visit the Mediterranean destination.

No injuries were reported during the incident, and all passengers were eventually able to board their flights, though some may have experienced delays due to the congestion.

Random Act of Helpfulness

Reflecting on the experience, Mrs Williams described it as “one of the most random days” of her life. What began as a routine return journey from a family holiday in Corfu transformed into an unexpected opportunity to help hundreds of fellow travellers.

The incident highlights both the challenges that can arise in busy airport environments when staffing issues occur, and the positive impact that quick-thinking individuals can have when they step forward to assist in crisis situations.

Mrs Williams and her family are from Exeter in Devon, in the South West of England. They had been enjoying a holiday on the Greek island of Corfu before encountering the chaotic scenes at the airport during their departure.
