US State Department Designates Two Greek ‘Antifa’ Groups as Terrorist Organizations

Athens, November 14 – The US State Department has announced its intention to designate two Greek organizations, ‘Armed Proletarian Justice’ and ‘Revolutionary Class Self-Defense,’ accused of ties to the Antifa movement, as Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTOs) and Specially Designated Global Terrorists (SDGTs). This move, set to take effect on November 20, 2025, aligns with the Trump administration’s commitment to counter political violence attributed to ‘Antifa’ groups globally.

State Department Announcement Details

The State Department’s announcement highlights a broader initiative to disrupt networks and organizations that identify as ‘anti-fascist’ but allegedly employ political violence and terrorist acts to undermine democratic institutions and fundamental freedoms. The designation extends to Antifa Ost, based in Germany, and three other violent ‘Antifa’ groups in Italy and Greece.

According to the official statement, groups linked to this movement often adopt revolutionary anarchist or Marxist ideologies, including anti-Americanism, anti-capitalism, and anti-Christianity. These ideologies are cited as justifications for violent attacks both domestically and internationally. The United States government has affirmed its commitment to utilizing all available tools to protect national and public security, including cutting off funding and resources for terrorists and targeting other ‘Antifa’ groups worldwide.

Actions Attributed to the Designated Groups

In a subsequent announcement, the US State Department detailed the activities of the four European organizations, accusing them of organizing or carrying out bombings, armed attacks, and other politically motivated actions.

‘Armed Proletarian Justice’

Regarding ‘Armed Proletarian Justice,’ the State Department identifies it as a Greek anarchist and ‘anti-capitalist’ group that has attempted and carried out improvised explosive device (IED) attacks against Greek state targets. The group claimed responsibility for a bomb placed near the riot police headquarters in Goudi on December 18, 2023.

‘Revolutionary Class Self-Defense’

‘Revolutionary Class Self-Defense’ is described as another Greek anarchist and ‘anti-capitalist’ group. This organization links its actions to broader political and social issues, citing its opposition to ‘capitalist structures,’ ‘state repression,’ and solidarity with Palestine. ‘Revolutionary Class Self-Defense’ claimed responsibility for two explosive device attacks targeting the Greek Ministry of Labor on February 3, 2024, and the offices of Hellenic Train on April 11, 2025.

The US State Department emphasizes that these designations are part of a concerted effort to address perceived threats from groups employing political violence under the guise of ‘anti-fascism.’ The move is expected to have significant implications for the targeted organizations, potentially limiting their financial resources and international activities.

This development underscores the ongoing global debate surrounding the definition and actions of ‘Antifa’ groups, as well as the measures governments are willing to take to counter what they perceive as domestic and international terrorism. The Greek authorities have yet to issue a formal statement regarding these designations, but the implications for security and law enforcement within Greece are likely to be substantial.

The decision to list these groups as terrorist organizations reflects a hardening stance by the US government against certain forms of political activism that involve violence. It also highlights the complex nature of defining and combating terrorism in a globalized world, where ideological movements can transcend national borders and pose challenges to state authority.

The State Department’s detailed account of the groups’ activities aims to provide a factual basis for the designations, linking their ideological motivations to specific acts of violence. This approach seeks to differentiate these groups from broader protest movements, focusing instead on their alleged use of terror tactics to achieve political objectives.

As the effective date of the designations approaches, further details regarding the implementation and consequences of these listings are anticipated. The international community will be watching closely to observe the impact of these measures on the designated groups and the broader landscape of political activism and counter-terrorism efforts.
