Athens is gearing up to host US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, in what is now considered a confirmed visit. Rubio’s arrival is anticipated to occur within the framework of the 6th round of the US-Greece Strategic Dialogue, a mechanism that has substantially upgraded bilateral relations in recent years.
Date Still Pending, but Preparations Underway
The exact date of the visit has not yet been finalized, but the most probable scenario places it either towards the end of 2025 or in the first two months of 2026. According to diplomatic sources, the visit could have happened sooner, but there was a delay in scheduling due to a government shutdown across the Atlantic. It is worth recalling that for 43 days, from October 1 to November 12, US federal government agencies were suspended (in simple terms, the public sector was paralyzed) as legislation for the fiscal year 2026 appropriations could not be approved.
Even before the official announcement of his arrival date, the necessary preparatory work is already underway in Greece. Days ago, Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis met with the new US Ambassador Kimberly Guilfoyle in an introductory meeting. Additionally, the head of diplomacy held a one-on-one meeting at the neoclassical building on Vasilissis Sofias with the US Deputy Secretary of State, Michael Rigas. Discussions focused precisely on Rubio’s upcoming visit, as well as on ways to further strengthen US-Greece cooperation in critical sectors such as energy and security.
Greece as a Strategic Energy Hub
Rubio is expected to elaborate on these issues, providing more details and proposals during his visit to Greece. Furthermore, major energy initiatives are in full swing in the Eastern Mediterranean region, with Greece playing a crucial role as a hub for channeling US LNG to the Balkans and Europe.
Within the framework of American diplomacy, the dynamism demonstrated by Ms. Kimberly Guilfoyle in the few weeks she has been in Athens is reinforced by her close relationship with former President Trump’s circle. This, as diplomatic sources estimate, will act as a counterweight to the US Ambassador appointed to Ankara, Mr. Tom Barrack, and will underscore Greece’s importance in the emerging energy strategy of the Eastern Mediterranean.
It is noteworthy that Ms. Guilfoyle herself hinted at Rubio’s arrival, stating that we should expect many more visits from high-ranking officials. Specifically, when asked during a conference about the possibility of high-level American officials visiting Greece, the Ambassador emphatically stated: “Secretary of State Marco Rubio will come to Athens,” adding that “other visits are also planned. In the coming period, there will be a strong public confirmation of the close relationship between the US and Greece.”
Therefore, Rubio’s visit is not merely a diplomatic move. It is a high-level signal, indicating that the US attaches particular importance to Greece’s role as a strategic partner and energy hub.
