The Hellenic Police (ELAS) announced in a press release that two Greek nationals were arrested by officers from the Corfu Police Directorate over the past 24 hours on charges of violating drug legislation.
First arrest: 40-year-old man found with 1.16 kilograms of cannabis
In the first case, officers from the Drug Enforcement Unit of the Sub-Directorate of Crime Investigation and Detection of Corfu proceeded with the arrest of a 40-year-old Greek national. During a search of a storage area in his residence, police discovered and confiscated a total of 700 grams of raw cannabis, 460 grams of cannabis leaves, and one precision scale.
The combined weight of the seized cannabis materials amounted to approximately 1.16 kilograms. The presence of the precision scale suggests possible intent to distribute or sell the narcotics, though official charges have not been fully detailed in the police statement.
Search conducted at suspect’s home
According to the police announcement, the search was conducted at the suspect’s residence following investigative work by the Drug Enforcement Unit. The officers targeted the storage area of the home, where the illegal substances were found and immediately seized as evidence.
The 40-year-old was taken into custody and subsequently brought before the Corfu Misdemeanor Prosecutor to face charges related to possession and potential distribution of narcotics.
Second arrest: 47-year-old caught with cannabis and cocaine
In a separate incident, officers from the Crime Prevention and Suppression Team (O.P.K.E.) identified and arrested a 47-year-old Greek national who was found in possession of illegal drugs. The officers discovered and confiscated 4.5 grams of raw cannabis, 3.45 grams of cocaine, and one electronic precision scale.
The arrest highlights ongoing efforts by local police units to combat drug trafficking and possession in the Corfu region. The combination of cannabis and cocaine, along with the precision scale, indicates possible involvement in street-level drug dealing.
Officers from Crime Prevention Unit involved
The Crime Prevention and Suppression Team, known locally as O.P.K.E., is a specialized unit tasked with proactive policing and prevention of criminal activity. The team conducts regular patrols and targeted operations to identify individuals involved in drug-related offenses and other criminal activities.
Following his arrest, the 47-year-old suspect was also brought before the Corfu Misdemeanor Prosecutor to face charges under Greek drug legislation.
Both suspects face prosecution
Both arrested individuals were brought before the Corfu Misdemeanor Prosecutor to answer charges related to violations of Greece’s narcotics laws. The specific charges and potential penalties will be determined during the legal proceedings.
Under Greek law, possession of narcotics with intent to distribute carries significantly harsher penalties than simple possession for personal use. The presence of precision scales in both cases may be used as evidence of intent to sell or distribute the drugs.
Ongoing police operations against drug crime in Corfu
The arrests are part of ongoing efforts by the Corfu Police Directorate to combat drug-related crime on the island. Both the Drug Enforcement Unit and the Crime Prevention and Suppression Team have been actively conducting operations to identify and apprehend individuals involved in the possession, distribution, and trafficking of illegal narcotics.
Corfu, a popular tourist destination in the Ionian Islands, has seen increased police activity aimed at maintaining public safety and preventing drug-related offenses, particularly during peak tourist seasons and throughout the year.
The Hellenic Police have emphasized their commitment to continuing such operations and have encouraged residents to report any suspicious activity related to drug use or distribution to local authorities.
