Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has confirmed that the Greece-Turkey High-Level Cooperation Council will convene in the near future, in response to Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ recent assessment that the conditions are now “mature” for such a meeting.
Turkish President Erdogan to Host Council
In an interview with Kathimerini’s correspondent Manolis Kostidis on Saturday, Fidan stated that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan would gladly host the council and chair the proceedings.
Originally scheduled for early 2025 in Ankara, the meeting had been postponed by the Turkish side. “This High-Level Cooperation Council must take place now. Our president will be happy to host and preside over it,” Fidan emphasized.
Reviving Bilateral Dialogue
When questioned about Mitsotakis’ proposal for a summit involving Eastern Mediterranean countries, Fidan responded: “We have not examined it yet, but first we need to revive the High-Level Cooperation Council.” This indicates a focus on strengthening existing bilateral mechanisms before exploring broader regional initiatives.
The confirmation of the council meeting signifies a potential step forward in diplomatic relations between Greece and Turkey, aiming to address various issues of mutual interest and foster greater cooperation in the region. The timing of this announcement, following a period of diplomatic exchanges, suggests a renewed impetus for dialogue between the two nations.
The High-Level Cooperation Council serves as a crucial platform for discussing political, economic, and cultural ties, as well as addressing ongoing disputes. Its revival is expected to contribute to a more stable and constructive relationship between Athens and Ankara.
Further details regarding the exact date and agenda of the council meeting are anticipated to be announced in due course.
