Athens EPPO Strengthens Team with Three New Appointments
Athens, June 24, 2026 – The Athens branch of the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) has announced the appointment of three new prosecutors, bolstering its capacity to combat financial crime and protect the European Union’s financial interests. The selections were made by a senior panel of Supreme Court judges on Wednesday, following a request from the EPPO to expand its local team.
The newly appointed prosecutors are Dimitris Zimianitis, Dimitris Nomikos, and Dimitris Apostolas. Their addition increases the total number of prosecutors in the Athens office from 10 to 13. This expansion is a direct response to the growing caseload and the EPPO’s commitment to effectively investigate and prosecute offenses affecting the EU budget.
Competitive Selection Process
The selection process for these crucial roles was highly competitive, with a total of 25 prosecutors applying for the three available positions. The rigorous selection by Supreme Court judges underscores the importance and sensitivity of the work carried out by the EPPO.
The European Public Prosecutor’s Office is an independent body of the European Union responsible for investigating, prosecuting and bringing to judgment crimes against the financial interests of the EU. These include various forms of fraud, corruption, and serious cross-border VAT fraud. The expansion of the Athens office reflects the EPPO’s strategic efforts to enhance its operational capabilities across member states.
EPPO’s Growing Role in Greece
This latest development comes amid increasing attention on the EPPO’s activities in Greece. Previously, the terms of European prosecutors in Greece were renewed, averting potential legal clashes and ensuring continuity in ongoing investigations. The Greek government has consistently reiterated its commitment to supporting the EPPO’s mandate, recognizing its vital role in upholding the rule of law and ensuring accountability for financial misconduct.
The additional staff will enable the Athens EPPO office to handle a larger volume of complex cases, contributing to a more robust and efficient justice system. This move is expected to further strengthen the EPPO’s presence and impact in Greece, aligning with broader European efforts to safeguard public funds and promote transparency.
The European Public Prosecutor’s Office continues to be a cornerstone in the fight against financial crime, and these new appointments signify a reinforced dedication to its mission in the region.
