ATHENS, August 7 – The National Public Health Organization (EODY) announced 151 new cases of the novel coronavirus across Greece on Friday, August 7th. Of these, three new infections were confirmed on the island of Corfu, while seven were detected at the country’s points of entry. The total number of confirmed cases nationwide has now reached 5,270.
National COVID-19 Overview
The daily EODY report indicates that 54.6% of all cases are male. A significant portion of cases, 1,379 (26.2%), are linked to travel from abroad, while 2,611 (49.5%) are associated with already known infections. These figures highlight the ongoing challenge of managing both imported and community-spread cases.
Hospitalizations and Critical Care
Currently, 14 individuals are intubated in critical care units, with an average age of 70 years. Three (21.4%) of these patients are female, with the remainder being male. A majority, 71.4%, have underlying health conditions or are aged 70 and above, underscoring the vulnerability of older populations and those with pre-existing illnesses. Encouragingly, 129 patients have been discharged from Intensive Care Units (ICUs).
No New Fatalities, Total Deaths Remain at 210
The EODY report also confirmed that no new deaths were recorded on August 7th, leaving the total number of fatalities in the country at 210. Of these, 67 (31.9%) were women, and the rest were men. The median age of those who succumbed to the virus was 76 years, with 95.7% having underlying health conditions and/or being 70 years of age or older. This data consistently points to age and comorbidity as significant risk factors for severe outcomes.
