The year 1985 was a time of burgeoning optimism in Greece. The PASOK government was campaigning for re-election, the ‘Rock In Athens’ festival promised to bring punk and rock music to the capital, and the intoxicating scent of lifestyle magazines, with their colorful advertisements for holidays in Mykonos and other Cycladic islands, was beginning to permeate society. Yet, amidst this vibrant backdrop, a crime of raw, Hollywood-esque violence unfolded outside the village of Giannades in Corfu, leaving an indelible stain on the island’s serene beauty.
A Family Holiday Turns into a Nightmare
The German B. Ekof, married to a Greek woman, routinely spent his holidays on the Greek islands. With their daughter, Carmen, they were enjoying the sun and the magical hues of the Ionian Sea at the ‘Hermones’ hotel. Life seemed idyllic. However, on Sunday, May 8th, Carmen suddenly disappeared. Ekof immediately reported her missing to the police.
The island’s police force launched an immediate search operation. Every nearby path leading from the hotel where the family was staying was meticulously combed. On Monday, Ekof walked along a nearby coastal area. He suddenly spotted a tent, pitched among the ruins of a monastery. As he approached closer, he discovered a tragic scene: two young women lay face down in a pool of blood. Neither of them was his daughter. After confirming the women were dead, Ekof ran back to alert the police.
The Unveiling of a Serial Killer
It didn’t take long for the police to unravel the mystery. Just 150 meters away from the two murdered women, Carmen was found, also brutally killed.
Autopsies were performed. It seemed unlikely that the killer’s motive was robbery or rape. This chilling realization meant that a maniacal, serial killer was at large, ready to strike again. The truth, however, soon came to light.
The police magazine ‘Astynomiki Anaskopisi’ described 23-year-old Alexis Armenis as ‘unemployed’. The young man lived in the village of Giannades and had a history of deportation from Germany due to violent behavior. Armenis was betrayed when he returned to the crime scene. There, he was apprehended by the police without resistance. He confessed to his heinous acts without difficulty.
A Chilling Confession: “My Mind Went Blurry”
“I had gone out to hunt foxes, I saw a bush moving and I shot. When I got closer, I saw that I had killed a girl. My mind went blurry and I killed the second one. The third girl tried to escape. I chased her, and after reloading my gun, I shot her,” Armenis chillingly recounted.
Alexis Armenis was arrested and remanded in custody. The residents of the Corfu village felt a great sense of relief. One less maniacal killer on the loose. The horrific events of that summer left an indelible mark on the island, a stark reminder of the darkness that can lurk beneath the surface of even the most idyllic settings.
