Corfu, Greece – The Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, through its Civil Aviation Authority, has officially announced a tender for the procurement and installation of advanced Surveillance Systems (TAR) at eight key airports across Greece. This significant initiative is designed to modernize the country’s air navigation services, ensuring enhanced safety and operational efficiency.
Eight Airports to Benefit from Modern Radar Technology
The tender encompasses the acquisition and installation of eight (8) radar systems, featuring Mode-S capability and updated specifications. The total estimated cost for this comprehensive upgrade project is 53.6 million euros. The airports slated to receive these new systems include Thessaloniki, Heraklion, Attavyros, Rhodes Terminal Airport, Corfu (“Ioannis Kapodistrias”), Limnos, Karpathos, and Andravida. The project will also cover all associated installation works at these locations.
Minister Emphasizes Strategic Importance of Modernization
Commenting on the tender announcement, the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Christos Dimas, underscored the strategic importance of this upgrade. “The installation of new radar systems with Mode-S capability at Greek airports constitutes one of the seven core pillars of the Action Plan we are implementing to enhance the air navigation sector,” Minister Dimas stated.
He further elaborated that this plan is being executed in close cooperation with key European aviation bodies, including the European Commission (DG MOVE), EASA, and Eurocontrol. “The modernization of technological systems is an indispensable condition in this endeavor, which is complemented by the administrative reform of the Civil Aviation Authority, already legislated, and, of course, the ongoing recruitment of specialized personnel,” Dimas added, highlighting a holistic approach to aviation sector improvement.
Mode-S Technology: A Leap Forward in Air Traffic Control
The inclusion of Mode-S capability in the new radar systems represents a significant technological advancement. Mode-S (Mode Select) is a more sophisticated radar surveillance technology that allows for selective interrogation of aircraft, providing more detailed and accurate information about each individual flight. This enhances air traffic controllers’ ability to identify, track, and manage aircraft, particularly in increasingly crowded airspace, thereby improving safety and reducing the risk of mid-air collisions.
Broader Implications for Greek Aviation
This tender is part of a larger, concerted effort by the Greek government to bring its aviation infrastructure up to modern European standards. The upgrades are expected to not only improve safety but also contribute to a more efficient flow of air traffic, potentially reducing delays and enhancing the overall passenger experience. For airports like Corfu, a popular tourist destination, these improvements are crucial for handling the high volume of seasonal traffic effectively.
Economic and Operational Benefits Anticipated
Beyond safety and efficiency, the investment of 53.6 million euros is also anticipated to generate economic benefits through the procurement and installation phases. The long-term operational advantages will include reduced maintenance costs for outdated equipment and the ability to integrate with future air traffic management systems, aligning Greece’s aviation sector with evolving international standards.
The modernization program reflects Greece’s commitment to maintaining a robust and safe air transport system, essential for both its domestic connectivity and its vital tourism industry. The successful implementation of these radar systems will solidify Greece’s position within the European aviation network, ensuring it meets current and future demands for air travel.
