Teenagers Arrested in Corfu for Drug Possession, Parents Face Neglect Charges
Corfu, May 17 – Two minors, aged 15 and 16, were arrested in Corfu yesterday for drug possession, leading to the subsequent arrest of their parents on charges of negligent supervision. These arrests are part of intensified police operations targeting drug-related offenses involving minors in the area.
The incidents occurred as part of increased surveillance by the Corfu Crime and Extortion Suppression Unit, aimed at combating juvenile delinquency. The police operations focused on addressing drug trafficking and the role of parental supervision.
First Incident: 16-year-old and Father Arrested
In the first case, police officers located a 16-year-old in the Stefanos Padovas area. During a search, the minor refused to cooperate with authorities. Officers found a makeshift nylon package containing approximately 4 grams of raw cannabis in his possession, leading to his arrest. His 55-year-old father was also arrested and charged with negligent supervision of a minor.
Second Incident: 15-year-old and Father Arrested, Mother Sought
A few hours later, in a separate incident on Alkiviadis Dari Street, another 15-year-old was apprehended. A search of his grandfather’s residence uncovered approximately 73 grams of cannabis. Additionally, in a nearby abandoned area, police found five more packages (‘fixakia’) with a total weight of 5.5 grams, along with a precision scale showing traces of substances.
The minor’s 52-year-old father was also arrested in connection with this case, while his mother is currently being sought under the ex-officio procedure.
Ongoing Investigations and Broader Implications
Authorities are investigating the possibility that these two cases may be part of a broader network of juvenile drug trafficking. However, no additional evidence has yet emerged to directly link the two incidents. The investigations are ongoing, with police emphasizing both drug distribution and the importance of family supervision.
According to current information, no further arrests or expanded detentions have been announced. The preliminary investigation continues to ascertain potential connections with drug trafficking networks.
These arrests highlight the ongoing efforts of law enforcement in Corfu to address drug-related issues, particularly those involving young people, and underscore the legal responsibilities of parents in supervising their minor children.
