Corfu, June 11 – The Maestral winds are set to return to the Northern Ionian, with significant strengthening expected across the region on Friday, June 12, and Saturday, June 13. According to the latest forecasts from MeteoCorfu and data from the Petaleia meteorological station in Corfu, average wind intensities will reach 5 to 6 Beaufort, with stronger gusts locally hitting 7-8 Beaufort. These northwesterly winds are associated with the transfer of air masses across the Adriatic Sea from the western Balkan regions towards the Diapontia Islands and northwestern Corfu.

Wind Intensities and Affected Areas

Areas at higher altitudes, as well as the western and southwestern coastal parts of the island, including Paxos, will frequently experience gusts of 5 to 6 Beaufort, with some localized stronger bursts. Conversely, in the eastern parts of the prefecture, particularly in the southern Corfu Strait between Corfu and Igoumenitsa, gusts are not expected to exceed 5 Beaufort, ensuring no disruptions to ferry services.

By Sunday, June 14, the winds are projected to significantly weaken, shifting to more westerly to northwesterly directions. Temperatures are not expected to change substantially during this period.

Temperature Outlook for June 12-13

Maximum temperatures will locally reach 29-30°C, primarily in the inland plains and eastern coastal areas of the prefecture. However, during the evening and early morning hours, the strengthened northwesterly winds will bring cooler air, providing pleasant minimum temperatures in the mountainous and semi-mountainous regions of Corfu.

Fire Risk and Public Advisory

It is important to remember that Corfu is currently in the fire season. The intensified winds can contribute to the rapid spread of potential wildfires in the countryside. Therefore, increased caution and vigilance from all residents and visitors are required.
