Corfu, May 16 – Strong winds swept across Corfu on Saturday, resulting in damage to the Municipal Theater. A substantial section of the external cladding of the stage tower detached, though fortunately, no injuries were reported.
Emergency Response and Road Closure
The incident involved old composite panels and asphalt sheets, which were dislodged by the wind, with some even landing on the roadway, according to Ert news. Fire department forces and municipal officials immediately responded to the scene to remove the materials and secure the remaining parts of the cladding, as there was a risk of further detachment should the winds intensify.
The Mayor of Central Corfu, Stefanos Poulismenos, issued a statement regarding the incident, describing it as a new serious problem concerning the theater’s roof superstructure. He noted that the strong winds caused the detachment of the old and brittle wall covering, which is approximately 50 years old. The Mayor highlighted the immediate mobilization of the Civil Protection, Culture, and Technical Services Departments of the Municipality, who worked in cooperation with the Fire Department and Traffic Police.
To ensure the safe completion of the material removal operation, it was deemed necessary to temporarily close traffic on Mantzarou Street.
Previous Incidents and Ongoing Issues
This incident adds to a series of recent events in Greece. Earlier on Saturday, traffic regulations were announced for Metro Line 2, with stations “Sepolia,” “Attiki,” “Larisis Station,” and “Metaxourgeio” closing at 9:40 PM, two and a half hours earlier than usual. Additionally, a traffic accident occurred on Patision Street involving three cars and two motorcycles, resulting in two injuries.
The Corfu Municipal Theater, a significant cultural landmark, has faced challenges related to its aging infrastructure. The Mayor’s statement underscores the need for addressing these long-standing issues to ensure the safety and preservation of the building.
Local authorities are expected to assess the full extent of the damage and plan for necessary repairs to prevent future occurrences, especially given the potential for strong winds in the region.
