Strong Earthquake Strikes Epirus, Felt in Corfu
Corfu, March 13, 2026 – A powerful earthquake, with an initial magnitude of 5.3 on the Richter scale, occurred early Sunday morning, March 8, 2026, at 5:32 local time. The tremor, originating 12 km east of Leptokarya in Thesprotia at a depth of 12 km, was distinctly felt across Corfu.
The initial impression created by the earthquake was prolonged, followed by a series of smaller seismic tremors. The Geodynamic Institute reported the following aftershocks:
- 05:36:29 – 26.1 km Southeast of Kerasovo, Ioannina: 4.7 magnitude
- 05:44:22 – 16.8 km Northeast of Mavroudi, Igoumenitsa: 2.9 magnitude
- 05:50:04 – 18.2 km Northeast of Mavroudi, Igoumenitsa: 2.4 magnitude
Seismologist Akis Tselentis commented on social media regarding the seismic activity in the region. He noted that over the past seven days, 28 earthquakes up to 2.5 Richter magnitude had occurred in Leptokarya and within a 100 km radius. This included 5 earthquakes of magnitude 2 or higher and 23 earthquakes below magnitude 2.
Tselentis expressed reassurance, stating, “I believe that the magnitudes that will follow will be small, and I see no cause for concern for this specific area. The aftershock sequence so far is normal.”
The earthquake caused no immediate reports of injuries or significant damage in Corfu or the surrounding areas. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely.
