Corfu, December 6 – The Corfu Police Department has issued a new announcement regarding ongoing traffic regulations in the Agios Ioannis Peristeron area of South Corfu. The road closure, affecting the provincial road from Corfu to Lefkimmi, specifically the section between the Marbela Hotel in Agios Ioannis Peristeron and the Mira Mare Hotel in Moraitika, has been extended. These regulations will remain in effect from Saturday, December 6, 2025, until Monday, December 8, 2025, at 4:00 PM.

Detailed Traffic Arrangements and Detours

The updated traffic plan includes several key changes to facilitate movement while ensuring safety and managing congestion in the affected area. Motorists are advised to follow the designated detours and adhere to the new regulations to avoid delays.

Specific Traffic Regulations:

  1. Complete Road Closure: Traffic and parking are prohibited on the provincial road connecting Corfu and Lefkimmi, from the Marbela Hotel in Agios Ioannis Peristeron up to the Mira Mare Hotel in Moraitika.
  2. Private Vehicle Detour (Corfu to Lefkimmi): Private passenger vehicles (I.X.E.) traveling from the Corfu National Road towards Lefkimmi will be diverted through Vryoni, Ponti, Agioi Deka, Strongyli, and Messonghi. The same route will apply in reverse for vehicles moving from Lefkimmi towards Corfu.
  3. Heavy Vehicle Detour (Up to 10T): Vehicles weighing up to 10 tons, traveling in both directions (from Corfu National Road to Lefkimmi and vice versa), will be exclusively routed through Messonghi, Agios Matthaios, Vouniatades, Agioi Theodoroi, Kastellanoi, Milia, and Vryoni.
  4. One-Way System in Agios Ioannis: The municipal road of Agios Ioannis (at the height of Marbela) will operate as a one-way street, directing traffic towards Strongyli. Only private passenger vehicles (I.X.E.) will be permitted on this route.
  5. Restriction for Heavy Trucks: Truck traffic exceeding 10 tons is prohibited from the municipal parking area of Benitses up to the Messonghi roundabout.

Impact on Local Commuters and Tourism

These extended closures and detours are expected to impact local commuters, residents, and tourists traveling through South Corfu. The affected area is a significant route, especially for those visiting the popular coastal resorts and villages. The police urge all drivers to exercise caution, follow road signs, and allow for extra travel time.

Local authorities have not yet specified the reasons behind the extended closure, but such measures are typically implemented for road maintenance, infrastructure improvements, or safety concerns. Further announcements are anticipated if there are any changes to the current traffic plan.

Drivers are encouraged to stay informed through local news channels and official police announcements for the latest updates on traffic conditions in South Corfu. The cooperation of all road users is essential to ensure smooth and safe traffic flow during this period of adjustment.
