Corfu, April 26 – The South Corfu Municipal Authority is under fire following the abrupt adjournment of a Municipal Council meeting on Friday, April 25, 2026. The meeting, which was solely dedicated to the Municipal Water and Sewerage Company of South Corfu (DEYANK), was halted by the Mayor after an independent municipal councillor raised critical questions regarding the legality of the proposed procedures.
Independent Councillor Raises Legal Concerns
Aggeliki Skolariki, an independent municipal councillor for South Corfu, issued a statement detailing the events of the meeting. According to Skolariki, the meeting was called to approve the new Administrative Board of DEYANK, but it followed a previous cancellation by the Decentralized Administration due to procedural shortcomings. Skolariki emphasized her intention was not to vote against the proposal but to ensure its legality and prevent further delays and inconvenience to citizens.
Skolariki posed two crucial questions during the council session:
- Has the necessary due diligence been conducted to ensure that the citizens proposed to participate in the new Administrative Board meet the formal and substantive qualifications required by law?
- Is the current proposal legally sound to prevent another cancellation and further delays?
She stressed that her aim was solely to safeguard the legality of the proposal to avoid a repeat of the previous cancellation by the Decentralized Administration, which had resulted in a loss of valuable time.
Mayor Abruptly Halts Proceedings
Instead of providing answers, the Mayor reportedly announced an unjustified interruption of the Council meeting, provocatively stating to Skolariki that he would “not answer her.” The President of the Council then initially announced a 10-minute break. However, after the break, the President returned only to propose the postponement of the session, informing the councillors that the Mayor and most of the majority members had already departed, and that she herself would also be leaving.
This maneuver sparked outrage among citizens and the entire opposition. Skolariki highlighted the absurdity of the situation, especially given that the tourist season has already commenced and residents in Palaiokastro are facing water shortages. She stated that the Municipal Authority resorted to such tactics to avoid scrutiny and accountability.
Public and Opposition Outcry
The incident has drawn strong criticism from both the public and the opposition parties, who expressed their dismay at the Municipal Authority’s handling of such a critical issue. The lack of water in Palaiokastro, at the beginning of the tourist season, further exacerbates the public’s frustration with the perceived disarray within the municipal administration.
The independent councillor’s statement underscores a growing concern among local stakeholders about transparency and adherence to legal procedures within the South Corfu Municipality. The repeated failures to properly constitute the DEYANK board are seen as detrimental to the effective functioning of essential public services.
The incident is likely to intensify political tensions within the South Corfu Municipal Council and may lead to further calls for accountability from the Mayor and the ruling majority. The future of DEYANK and its ability to provide reliable water services to the residents of South Corfu remains uncertain following these developments.
